Job description

Medical or Clinical Assistant

Valley Health Systems, Inc., the parent company of Holyoke Medical Center, provides a broad range of physician services in offices conveniently located throughout Western Massachusetts. Holyoke Medical Center is an independent community hospital that has served the healthcare needs of the Pioneer Valley for over 125 years. We continue to grow and address the needs of our community through quality and patient-centered care. Our Orthopedics Practice is seeking a Medical or Clinical Assistant to perform duties within the scope of a medical assistant with additional tasks related to patient flow in the office and clinical reporting requirements.

Overview of responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Review and prepare patient charts by verifying EMR documentation, lab results, consultation reports, and visit information before appointments.
  • Room patients, obtain and document vital signs, medical history, medications, allergies, and other required information in the EMR.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures while providing professional, compassionate communication and addressing patient questions or delays.
  • Assist physicians and providers during examinations and clinical procedures, including administering injections and performing delegated clinical tasks.
  • Process prescription refill requests, update pharmacy information, and route medication requests to providers for approval.
  • Coordinate patient follow-up care, including scheduling appointments, referrals, diagnostic testing, and patient education resources.
  • Maintain accurate and complete electronic medical records, ensuring timely documentation and effective communication through EMR messaging.
  • Prepare, stock, clean, and organize exam rooms; sterilize or transport instruments; and ensure supplies and equipment are available for patient care.
  • Monitor clinical operations by documenting quality control logs, reporting equipment issues, maintaining inventory, and supporting a safe, clean work environment.
  • Support overall clinic operations by answering phones as needed, attending required training, floating to other departments, and performing additional duties assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent; must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Must follow the requisites to the appropriate profession, respectively:

  • Medical Assistant: Successful completion of a Medical Assistant school with ABHES or CAAHEP accreditation; must be registered/certified within six months of hire with one of the following: RMA/AMT, CMA/AAMA, or CCMA/NHA
  • Emergency Medical Technician: Must hold an EMT Certification in Massachusetts
  • Certified Nursing Assistant: Must hold a CNA Certification in Massachusetts

Licenses/Registrations: Current CPR certification.

Experience: Two years of general experience as a medical assistant in a patient care or clinic environment preferred

Special Aptitudes Activities: Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and follow written and verbal instructions accurately. This role requires knowledge of physician office billing procedures, medical terminology, basic administrative skills such as typing and filing, and proficiency with computer systems. Candidates should also possess the manual dexterity, attention to detail, and physical capabilities needed to safely perform clinical and administrative duties, including tasks such as venipuncture and patient assistance.
