Unlike traditional medical assistants who work in a specific office or specialty, floating medical assistants fill staffing gaps, assist during busy periods, and ensure consistent patient care throughout the organization. Their tasks may include taking vital signs, updating medical records, preparing exam rooms, and assisting with procedures as needed. This role requires adaptability, strong communication skills, and the ability to quickly learn new workflows.

How does being a floating medical assistant differ from a traditional medical assistant role in terms of daily responsibilities and team collaboration?

As a Floating Medical Assistant, your daily responsibilities can vary significantly since you are assigned to different departments or locations based on staffing needs. This flexibility requires you to quickly adapt to new workflows, electronic health record systems, and team dynamics. You’ll frequently collaborate with various healthcare providers and support staff, making strong communication and organizational skills essential. The role offers a dynamic work environment and the opportunity to gain experience across multiple specialties, which can be valuable for career growth within the healthcare field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a floating medical assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Floating Medical Assistant, you need a solid grasp of clinical procedures, patient care, and administrative tasks, typically supported by a medical assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent). Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, basic laboratory equipment, and scheduling software is essential. At Fertility Centers of New England (FCNE), we believe exceptional patient care begins with exceptional people. Since 1993, we have been a leader in fertility care, providing compassionate, personalized treatment to help individuals and families achieve their dreams of parenthood.

We are seeking a Medical Assistant/OR Technician (Floating Position) to join our clinical team at our Reading, MA location. This is an exciting opportunity for a flexible, patient-focused professional who enjoys variety in their workday. What You'll Do

  • Chaperone patient examinations and keep the EMR, charts, labs, imaging, and consents accurate and complete.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize clinical equipment, and keep supplies stocked and inventory current.
  • Provide floating coverage at our Braintree, Leominster, Westborough, and Boston offices, supporting physicians and daily clinical operations based on patient volume and staffing needs.
  • Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care while collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, sonographers, and the broader clinical team.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant or OR Technician program, or equivalent healthcare experience, preferred.
  • Current BLS certification, with experience in a medical office, procedural, surgical, OB/GYN, or fertility setting preferred.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel regularly between Reading, Braintree, Leominster, Westborough, and Boston offices.

Schedule

This position works 30 to 40 hours per week. Typical shifts run 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., depending on patient volume and operational needs. Regular travel to our Braintree, Leominster, Westborough, and Boston offices is required, and OR/PACU responsibilities are performed at the Reading location. This role requires working every other weekend and rotating holidays.
