Summary:
The Transportation Operations Manager is responsible for managing the district's in-house drivers, monitors, and trainers to ensure safe and efficient transportation is provided for all students.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a job related area or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be accepted
- Three years of experience in transportation operations management with either a school district, school bus contractor; or similar/equivalent program administration experience
- Two years of supervisory experience, including managing recruitment, hiring, discipline, and performance
Required Skills & Abilities
- Excellent knowledge of Federal, State, Local pupil transportation regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with drivers, monitors, and administration
- Strong team, group facilitation, and customer service skills
- Highly organized and efficient in record keeping, scheduling, communication plans, and meeting deadlines
- Enthusiastic, adapts well to different situations, dependable, with the ability to work in a self-directed manner with a diverse group of families, colleagues, and community partners
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize daily work to achieve desired results
- Demonstrated skills to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and handle conflict
- Strong background in the use of technology; including Google products and HR/Payroll/Finance programs
- Experience working in a collective bargaining unit environment.
- Experience with writing manuals and handbooks
- Experience with vehicle GPS tracking systems and reporting
Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with computerized routing systems
- CDL Class B Driver's License with School Bus and Passenger endorsements
Responsibilities:
Â
- Manage and coordinate the transportation of students to ensure the District is in compliance with Federal, State, Local regulations and District Policies and Procedures.
- Supervises and monitors daily work direction, conduct, and performance of district drivers and monitors.
- Monitors work assignments, tracking attendance and punctuality of assigned employees, and approves/denies routine time off.
- Analyze, monitor and approve payroll records weekly.
- Oversee the training program for all in-house drivers and monitors, including effective student management strategies.
- Evaluates labor needs and determines effective strategies to attract qualified candidates and interviews, selects, and initiates candidates into the hiring and training process.
- Responds to calls from parents, school administrators, and the general public in a respectful and responsive manner, and explains applicable laws and rules to attempt to resolve specific problems whenever possible.
- Conducts reviews for employees to determine progress, areas of improvement and field general questions they have.
- Communicates with HR to monitor the progress of leaves and injuries to determine workability of employees.
- Instructs employees in departmental policy and procedures, provides guidance on how to respond to unusual and/or difficult situations; provides feedback to drivers to correct inappropriate actions and takes disciplinary action as required.
- Supervises the drug and alcohol testing program as required by federal regulations.
- Gathers and maintains information necessary for internal and external transportation reporting as needed.
- Coordinates with school administrators regarding student discipline related problems.
- Assists the Safety Coordinator with the evaluation of school sites, bus routes and student bus stops for efficiency and safety.
- Coordinate with designated staff, supervisor, drivers, and monitors in student management, investigate problems of student discipline, property damage, complaints, and implement solutions
- Conducts fact-finding interviews in cooperation with school staff regarding parent, student, and driver/monitor concerns/complaints.
- Recruit, hire, evaluate, promote, coach, discipline and terminate staff as required.
- Assists in the ongoing evaluation of the Transportation Department and participates in continuous improvement initiatives.
- Represent the district Transportation Department at various meetings and seminars as directed by the department supervisor.
- Maintain active membership(s) in relevant professional organization(s).
