What is an export manager?

An export manager is in charge of all policies and procedures involved in the export of goods for a company and works to increase the efficiency of the exporting process. Your duties in this career include monitoring international shipments, ensuring compliance with customs regulations, consulting with clients about insurance and taxes, maintaining customer relations, and assessing new marketing prospects. Evaluating reports, maintaining documents, preparing effective business plans, and handling sales transactions are also your responsibilities. You also oversee staff members, track shipments, and confirm the delivery of the cargo to the carriers. As an export manager, you monitor the financial components of the process and search for opportunities to reduce taxes and shipping rates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an export manager?

To thrive as an Export Manager, you need expertise in international trade regulations, logistics, and market analysis, typically supported by a degree in business, international relations, or a related field. Familiarity with export documentation systems, ERP software, and certifications such as Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) are highly valuable. Exceptional negotiation, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving skills help build strong international relationships and navigate complex transactions. These abilities are crucial for ensuring compliance, optimizing global supply chains, and driving business growth in competitive markets.

What are some common challenges export managers face when coordinating international shipments?

Export Managers often encounter challenges such as navigating complex customs regulations, ensuring timely delivery despite potential logistical disruptions, and managing documentation requirements for different countries. They must also stay updated on changing trade laws and tariffs, which can impact shipping routes and costs. Proactive communication with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and international clients is crucial to anticipate and resolve issues quickly, making adaptability and problem-solving key skills for success in this role.

The Digital & Technology Solutions (DTS) group under the leadership of the Chief Information Officer was established in 2023 with the mission of empowering our customers and colleagues to take on the world, by seamlessly delivering secure and reliable digital experiences. Digital & Technology Solutions has set out to achieve the following objectives for EDC:

  • Define, execute, and sustain the integrated technology target state, target data model and technology operations required to enable EDC’s 2030 business transformation.
  • Establish and manage the rolling 3 Year Digital Roadmap that sequences the technology outcomes required to achieve the technology target state and facilitate its execution across all domains in the organization.
  • Keep pace with industry trends and emerging technologies, ensuring EDC has access to the digital technology tools it needs to stay relevant in the market and grow Canadian global trade.
  • Lead and ensure integrated digital, data, infrastructure, and cybersecurity implementations to create excellent customer, user, and employee experiences.

To position ourselves for success, the Digital Business Platforms group is seeking a senior Automation Technical Lead to own, scale, and operate EDC’s enterprise automation platform, with a strong emphasis on UiPath platform infrastructure and production operations within a regulated financial services environment.

The automation stack includes UiPath (Cloud Orchestrator), ServiceNow CSM & Automation Center, Power Platform, and Azure AI, integrated into EDC’s broader digital ecosystem. This role is a platform ownership and technical leadership role, not limited to bot development. You will be responsible for platform architecture, infrastructure, governance, security, and production reliability, while guiding senior developers and principals across delivery teams.

In this role, you will help evolve EDC’s automation capability from project-based delivery into a run‑and‑grow enterprise platform, ensuring automation is secure, scalable, auditable, and resilient.

If you thrive in environments where production accountability, technical depth, and governance matter, we’d love to hear from you.

What you will be doing:

Automation Platform Ownership & Infrastructure:

  • Own and operate UiPath Cloud Orchestrator, and other Automation platforms as needed, as an enterprise platform, including environment design (DEV / TEST / PROD), folder-based governance, RBAC, and controlled promotion.
  • Design, provision, and maintain unattended bot execution infrastructure, working closely with Cloud and Microsoft teams to support:
    • Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and/or Cloud PCs
    • Machine pools, capacity planning, and scheduling strategies
    • Patch management, golden images, and execution hardening
  • Manage UiPath platform upgrades, patching, feature adoption, and release planning to minimize production risk.
  • Define and enforce platform standards on all automation platforms (folders, naming, assets, queues, triggers, logging).

Identity, Security & Secrets:

  • Design and manage bot/service identities, ensuring least‑privilege access and proper segregation of duties.
  • Integrate automations with enterprise Active Directory / Entra ID and secrets management solutions (e.g., CyberArk).
  • Ensure automation platform implementations meet security, audit, and regulatory requirements.

Automation Engineering & Standards:

  • Define and govern UiPath development standards, including:
    • REFramework usage and customization
    • Queue-based transaction processing
    • Business vs system exception handling
    • Idempotent design and safe reprocessing patterns
  • Build and maintain reusable libraries, components, and templates to accelerate delivery and reduce technical debt.
  • Perform technical design and code reviews, acting as a trusted authority for senior developers and principals.

Platform Operations & Production Support:

  • Own automation production reliability, monitoring, and operational health.
  • Define and track operational KPIs (success rates, queue health, utilization, MTTR).
  • Lead technical incident response, root cause analysis, and preventive remediation.
  • Coordinate Change Requests (CRs), risk assessments, approvals, and production deployments with Release and Service teams.
  • Monitor vendor roadmaps and release notes to anticipate platform impacts.

Integrations & Digital Ecosystem:

  • Design and govern integrations between UiPath and other platforms, including:
    • ServiceNow CSM & Automation Center
    • API‑based integrations (including APIM where applicable)
    • Data platforms and analytics solutions
    • Power Platform and other automation technologies
  • Ensure automations align with EDC’s enterprise architecture and digital strategy.

AI & Intelligent Automation

  • Lead adoption of AI capabilities within UiPath and other automation platforms (e.g., Document Understanding, AI Center, Autopilot, agentic automation).
  • Understand and govern AI unit consumption, cost controls, and usage guardrails.
  • Ensure responsible use of AI with appropriate human‑in‑the‑loop controls in regulated processes.

Technical Leadership & Enablement:

  • Act as the goto UiPath and other automation platforms technical authority, trusted by senior engineers and principals.
  • Lead and contribute to Communities of Practice (CoP) and technical forums.
  • Coach and mentor developers and citizen developers through standards, templates, and guardrails.
  • Communicate complex technical risks, trade‑offs, and platform decisions clearly to senior stakeholders.
What we are looking for:
  • Post‑secondary degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in enterprise automation, with hands‑on UiPath platform experience.
  • Demonstrated ownership of UiPath Orchestrator administration, not just bot development.
  • Experience setting up and operating:
    • Unattended bots;
    • Bot execution infrastructure (AVD / Cloud PCs or similar);
    • Bot/service accounts and credential vault integrations (e.g., CyberArk/Idira).
  • Strong experience with REFramework and scalable automation patterns.
  • Proven experience operating automations in production within regulated environments.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Git.
  • Proven ability to lead senior engineers and deliver enterprise‑grade automation platforms.
What will make you stand out:
  • Experience in financial services, insurance, banking, or government‑regulated environments.
  • Experience with ServiceNow CSM / Automation Center and Power Platforms
  • Experience integrating automation with APIs, APIM, and enterprise data platforms.
  • Experience governing AI enabled automation in production environments.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort presenting to senior technical and business audiences.
  • Bilingual in both official languages (English and French).
