Both roles are integral to the event planning industry but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Events Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Events Intern, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of event planning, often supported by coursework in hospitality, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with event management software, virtual meeting platforms, and tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is commonly required. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring smooth event execution and positive experiences for both participants and stakeholders.

What are Events Interns?

Events Interns are entry-level professionals who assist with the planning, organization, and execution of events such as conferences, meetings, and social gatherings. They typically support event coordinators and managers by performing tasks like researching venues, communicating with vendors, managing event logistics, and helping with on-site event setup and breakdown. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in the events industry, allowing interns to develop organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Events Internships are common stepping stones for those seeking a career in event planning or hospitality management.

What are some common challenges an Events Intern might face during large-scale event planning, and how can they effectively handle them?

Events Interns often encounter challenges such as last-minute changes, coordinating with multiple vendors, and managing tight deadlines. Effective communication, staying organized with detailed checklists, and being adaptable are key to handling these situations smoothly. Interns are encouraged to proactively ask questions, seek guidance from senior team members, and be ready to step into different support roles as needed. This experience helps build problem-solving skills and resilience, both of which are highly valued in the events industry.

Job description

Title: Events Intern - Unpaid Internship
Department: Development โ€“ Events Team

Your Mission:
As an Events Intern, you will support the ARLโ€™s mission by assisting the Events Team in planning, preparing, and executing events that raise awareness and critical support for the animals in our care. This internship provides hands-on experience in the nonprofit events industry while building professional skills that can be applied across many career paths.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
During your internship, you will work alongside the Events Team to coordinate and execute ARL events. Youโ€™ll help recruit donations for auctions, raffles, and event needs, build and manage event pages and ticketing software, and create engaging content for social media and the ARL website. You will gain experience in event logistics, scheduling rentals and birthday parties, and developing marketing and social media plans to drive community participation. Youโ€™ll also connect with local businesses, sponsors, and donors to build partnerships while learning creative ways to fundraise for nonprofit organizations.

What You Bring:
You are enthusiastic about events and community engagement, with an interest in nonprofit work and fundraising. You bring strong communication and organizational skills, creativity in problem-solving, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. You are open to learning, adaptable in a fast-paced environment, and willing to assist with a wide variety of projects. Availability on some evenings and weekends is required.

Working Conditions:
The ARL's events team accepts interns year-round. This internship requires a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends based on event needs. Work will take place at ARL locations and occasionally off-site at event venues. This internship is unpaid and should be viewed as an opportunity for professional development and skill building rather than paid employment.

Why Work at the ARL?
At the ARL, every event supports lifesaving programs and services for animals in need. As an Events Intern, youโ€™ll gain valuable experience in event planning, fundraising, marketing, and community partnershipsโ€”all while contributing to a mission-driven organization that makes a difference every day. This is an opportunity to grow your skills, expand your network, and create meaningful impact for both people and animals in our community.
