Job description

APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN (Repair Shop)

Location: Repair Shop, General Services Headquarters - Forest Park, GA

JOB SUMMARY

The Apprentice Electrician is a training position to develop the knowledge and skills a Journeyman Electrician will need to perform their job safely and competently. This position is located at the Repair Shop facility in Forest Park, GA. However, on occasion, you will be expected to travel to other work locations to repair equipment on site.

An Apprentice Electrician will work alongside a Journeyman Electrician at the Repair Shop to train and complete tasks associated with the Journeyman Development program to repair and recondition all distribution and transmission equipment. Duties include but are not limited to: maintenance and repair of Distribution and Transmission related equipment such as overheads, single phase and three phase transformers, reclosers, power transformers, mobile substations, and breakers, as well as, learning to competently operate an oil processing station. Related activities include the general usage of hand tools along with operating equipment such as cranes, forklifts, saws, drill press, and pneumatic tools. 

Candidates must be able to support a 24/7 work schedule (shift work) including holidays and overtime when necessary. Must be willing to work various shifts, generally day or evening shifts. Subject to callout overtime situations.

Work environment may include working in adverse conditions such as poor weather and hot / cold temperatures, at elevated heights, or in compartments with restricted space.

This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay is $6716 per month / $38.75 per hour and is not negotiable.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.

  • To be considered for an interview, candidates must qualify on both of the following: Construction and Skilled Trades Test (CAST) and the Skills, Knowledge, and Aptitude Test (SKAT) - Electrical.

Preferred:

  • Two-year technical degree or certificate in Electrical / Electronic Technology and/or related experience in Industrial Maintenance, Electrical or Mechanical Maintenance.

  • Military experience as Electrical or Mechanical Technician a plus.

Experience Requirements:

  • This is an entry level position with experience in Industrial Electrician and Mechanical maintenance preferred.
  • Candidate must have strong safety awareness and adherence to safety practices.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Relevant work-related experience with basic transformer operating theory.

  • Basic understanding of wiring diagrams and control schematics.

  • Knowledge of electrical symbols and formulas will be necessary.

  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools is a must.

  • Ability to use precision measuring tools is essential. 

  • Good hand and eye coordination. 
  • Have a basic understanding of AC / DC electrical theory 

Behavioral Aspects:

  • Candidate must be willing to maintain regular attendance. 
  • The candidate must be available to work outside normal operating hours which could include nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Candidate must be able to work various shifts, primarily day and evening shifts.
  • Must be available to respond to any emergency callout. 
  • The candidate must be a team player, customer oriented, trainable, and willing to develop their career.
  • Must understand the value of customer service and support.
  • Work outside basic job functions as needed to support the business.

Other Requirements:

  • This is an IBEW covered position. 
  • Valid driver's license is required.

  • Must possess or able to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification card within the first 6 months on the job.
  • Candidates must be willing to work outside in all climate conditions and work at heights requiring the use of fall-protection (greater than 4ft.)
  • Work in tight or congested areas and in abnormal positions.
  • Must successfully qualify on the Post Offer Employment Test (POET) by demonstrating ability to complete certain physical tasks.

TRAINING

Apprentice Electricians will undergo an extensive training program through the Repair Shop Journeyman Development Program, which includes on-the-job training with classroom training. The training program lasts 4 1/2 years.

Upon successful completion of the Repair Shop Journeyman Development Program the employee will be promoted to a Journeyman Electrician position through automatic progression.
