What is an Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer?

An Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer is a professional who works on creating, developing, and optimizing visual content for computers, such as 2D/3D graphics, animations, and visual effects. They typically use programming languages like C++ or Python and graphics APIs like OpenGL or DirectX to build and improve graphics engines, rendering pipelines, and visual applications. As entry-level engineers, they work under the guidance of senior engineers to learn industry standards, contribute to team projects, and gain hands-on experience in computer graphics development.

What types of projects and technologies can an Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer expect to work with in their first year?

As an Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as developing visual effects, 3D modeling, rendering algorithms, or graphics engine features. You'll likely use programming languages like C++ or Python and work with APIs such as OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan. Collaboration with artists, designers, and senior engineers is common, providing valuable mentorship and learning opportunities. Early projects often focus on supporting tasks, bug fixes, or implementing small features, helping you build a strong foundation in graphics programming and team workflows.

What is the difference between Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer vs Entry Level 3D Artist?

AspectEntry Level Computer Graphics EngineerEntry Level 3D Artist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Graphics, Computer Science, or related fieldBachelor's in Fine Arts, Animation, or related field
Work EnvironmentTech companies, software development, simulation projectsGame studios, animation, film production
Industry UsageSoftware development, visualization, simulationEntertainment, gaming, media

While both roles involve computer graphics, Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineers focus on developing algorithms, software tools, and rendering techniques, often working in tech or simulation environments. Entry Level 3D Artists primarily create visual assets for games, films, or animations. The roles differ in their focus—engineering vs. artistic creation—though they share foundational skills in graphics software and design principles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Computer Graphics Engineer, you typically need a strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, mathematics (especially linear algebra), and graphics programming, often supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with graphics APIs such as OpenGL or DirectX, shader programming languages, and version control systems like Git is commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork help individuals stand out in this role. These skills are vital for efficiently developing, debugging, and optimizing graphical applications in collaborative environments.

Job description

Rylo is a powerful camera that captures everything around you and creates exceptionally smooth, beautiful video that's easy to share. Developed by a team of former Instagram and Apple engineers, Rylo's breakthrough stabilization software and smartphone app eliminate the traditional pain points of shooting, editing, and sharing videos. With Rylo, you don't have to worry about framing your shot or holding the camera steady to capture a video you're proud to share - simply hit record and make the perfect video after-the-fact.
See Rylo in action
At Rylo you'll be working in a small team that's building and shipping new consumer focused camera technology. You'll have a unique opportunity to drive software innovation and influence the hardware design to enable novel computational photography paradigms.
What we are looking for:
  • Demonstrated ability to research, design and implement graphic techniques. This includes features like post effects (Depth of Field, etc.), physically based optical effects, occlusion and global illumination.
  • Experience optimizing shaders for texture bandwidth, fill rate and ALU.
  • Experience debugging and profiling with tools like Razer and Renderdoc.
  • Experience working on render architecture with modern graphics APIs (Vulkan, Metal, D3D12), extra credit if the engine was multithreaded.
  • Solid knowledge of color theory.
  • 7+ years writing production code.
  • Deep knowledge of C++, C++11, design patterns.
  • Mobile platform focus.

Nice to have:
  • Experience writing cross platform code.
  • Experience designing for multi-threaded architectures.
  • Experience with optimization and profiling (Intel TBB, OpenMP or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with graph-based architecture.
  • Familiarity with design of high-level APIs.
  • Experience in profiling, debugging and testing complex systems.
  • Familiarity with 3D data structures and formats.
  • Familiarity with GPU computing APIs.

Why Rylo:
  • We're backed by Accel, Sequoia and Icon Ventures
  • You'll work with and learn from a highly cross-functional engineering team. Spanning software across the full stack: backend, frontend, iOS, Android, desktop, and embedded systems.
  • Just a year and a half after founding Rylo, we shipped our first camera on time and with a team of only 18. We love what we do and work hard to do it.
  • Since launching in November 2017, we've expanded distribution to some of the top retailers, such as Amazon and Best Buy.
  • We value: ownership, a thoughtful approach to problem solving, transparency, candor, and a willingness to learn and teach.
  • You'll help us build the future of cameras so that anyone can easily capture, edit, and share their favorite memories with the world.

Benefits and perks:
  • Your very own Rylo camera on your first day!
  • Join our team lunches, happy hours, and off-sites
  • Meaningful equity
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Easy access to snacks and drinks
