What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Tech, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, technical mathematics, and hands-on experience, usually backed by an associate degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with CAD software, measurement instruments, and industry-specific testing equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure precise execution of engineering tasks, support innovation, and maintain project efficiency and safety.

What are some common challenges Engineering Techs face when working on cross-functional project teams?

Engineering Techs often collaborate with engineers, designers, and production staff, which can present challenges such as communicating technical details to non-technical team members and balancing multiple project priorities. Adapting to different workflows and ensuring that technical documentation aligns with the needs of each department are also common hurdles. Developing strong communication skills and being proactive in seeking clarification can help overcome these challenges and contribute to project success.

What are Engineering Techs?

Engineering Techs, or Engineering Technicians, are professionals who assist engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various products, equipment, or systems. They often work in fields such as manufacturing, electronics, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering. Their duties typically include preparing technical drawings, conducting experiments, collecting data, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring that projects meet quality and safety standards. Engineering Techs bridge the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and practical application in the field.

What is the difference between Engineering Tech vs Mechanical Technician?

AspectEngineering TechMechanical Technician
CredentialsAssociate degree or technical certificationAssociate degree or technical certification
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and technical support in labs or officesMaintenance, repair, and installation in industrial or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, R&DManufacturing plants, maintenance departments, industrial facilities

Engineering Tech and Mechanical Technician roles share similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but differ mainly in their work environments and daily tasks. Engineering Techs focus on supporting engineering projects and testing, while Mechanical Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and repairs. Both roles are vital in manufacturing and industrial sectors, often overlapping in skills but distinct in responsibilities.

Engineering Technology Instructor
Job Description
Engineering Technology Instructor
Location: Marietta, GA (Office/Training Center Based with Travel) Full-Time | 40 Hours/Week
Do you have teaching or instructional experience and enjoy helping others learn? Are you comfortable working with hands-on mechanical or electromechanical equipment-or excited to grow those skills with support and training? Join our growing North American Service Team as an Engineering Technology Instructor, where you'll help build the skills and safety awareness of engineers and customers working with advanced conveyor and sortation systems.
1. About the Role
In this instructor role, your primary focus is teaching and training. You'll deliver engaging classroom sessions, hands-on demonstrations, and practical labs covering the mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components of our automated systems.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong mechanical or electromechanical background who enjoys sharing knowledge and working hands-on with industrial equipment.
2. Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver technical training (approx. 30% classroom, 70% hands-on) to internal teams and customers.
  • Teach maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, and safe operation of mechanical and electromechanical equipment.
  • Conduct practical demonstrations using industrial conveyor and sortation systems.
  • Adapt training content to different learning styles and experience levels.
  • Support the setup and growth of our new training center in Marietta, GA.

3. Your Department
  • Based in Marietta, GA, our North American HQ supports projects across the US, Canada, and Mexico.
  • The new training center will serve as the North American hub for technical training, aligned with our global training organization in The Netherlands.

4. What We're Looking For
  • Education or Experience: associate or bachelor's degree in electrical, or Electromechanical Engineering Technology. Or 3+ years of hands-on experience as a field service or maintenance technician working with mechanical or electromechanical systems.
  • Technical Background: Experience in the installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting of mechanical or electromechanical equipment-ideally in industrial or automation environments.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in automated machinery, conveyors, robotics, or industrial equipment is a plus but not required.
  • Controls Knowledge: Exposure to control systems or industrial software is a plus, though not required.
  • Training & Communication: Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Instructional Experience: Prior experience delivering technical training, coaching, or mentoring is highly desirable.
  • Digital Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel); experience with e-learning platforms or digital training tools is a bonus.

5. Additional Requirements
  • Ability to deliver a demo lesson as part of the selection process.
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Must pass a background check to access secured customer sites.

6. Travel Expectations
• Up to 30% travel annually, mostly within the continental US.
• Higher travel expected during the first year for onboarding and training center development.
• Occasional international travel may be required.
7. Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a global leader in automation and logistics technology.
  • Help shape the future of technical training in North America.
  • Become part of a collaborative training team with international exposure.

If you're a (electro) mechanically minded trainer or a technician ready to step into a training role, we'd love to hear from you!
