What does an energy consultant do?

An energy consultant helps businesses or home owners to develop a plan for reducing energy consumption in their building. Though the title is a consultant, you may also be a salesperson. Depending on your employer, your responsibilities may revolve around pitching specific products and brands designed to reduce consumption. Regardless of your role, your duties begin with getting a baseline on the current usage, known as an energy audit. You detect and identify trouble spots and areas for improvement, often working with a team of specialists to recommend specific changes to build a customized solution. Your work will include a presentation of these recommendations along with answering any concerns. Again depending on your employer, this presentation may be sales focused or strategy focused.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy consultant?

To thrive as an Energy Consultant, you need a strong understanding of energy management, sustainability practices, and relevant industry regulations, often backed by a degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with energy modeling software, data analysis tools, and certifications like LEED or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help consultants effectively advise clients and implement solutions. These skills are crucial for delivering cost-effective, compliant, and sustainable energy strategies that meet client needs and regulatory requirements.

What are typical challenges energy consultants face when implementing energy-saving initiatives for clients?

Energy Consultants often encounter challenges such as balancing client budgets with the recommended energy-efficient technologies, navigating complex regulatory requirements, and ensuring stakeholder buy-in for proposed changes. Additionally, they may face hurdles in collecting accurate energy usage data and integrating new solutions with existing infrastructure. Building strong relationships and maintaining clear communication with clients and vendors is crucial to overcoming these obstacles and successfully delivering impactful results.

How do energy consultants get paid?

Energy consultants typically earn compensation through hourly rates, project-based fees, or retainers. Some may also receive performance-based bonuses or commissions if they help clients achieve energy savings or cost reductions. Payment structures depend on the scope of work and client agreements.

Job description

Build a Career in Residential Energy - With Real Income From Week One
California electricity rates aren't slowing down, and Antelope Valley homeowners are actively looking for guidance on solar and battery storage. SolarShoppers - voted AVS Best - is hiring a Residential Energy Consultant to meet with homeowners, analyze their energy usage, and design custom solar and storage solutions.
This is a consultative role built for experienced sellers who want a structured ramp, weekly income while they build their pipeline, and uncapped earning potential once they're rolling.
What You'll Do
  • Conduct in-home and on-site energy consultations with Antelope Valley homeowners
  • Review utility bills, usage patterns, and roof/property conditions to design the right system
  • Educate homeowners on solar economics, financing, tax credits, NEM 3.0, and battery backup
  • Build your own client base through neighborhood outreach, referrals, community events, and networking
  • Walk customers through proposals, contracts, and the path to a finished install
  • Stay current on California utility rate changes and incentive programs

Compensation Structure
We've built this role so you can earn from week one while you ramp:
  • $500/week training pay for your first 4 weeks (non-recoverable - yours to keep)
  • Per-project commission: $2,000-$4,000 depending on system size and storage attach
  • Monthly performance bonuses:
    • $1,000 bonus for 3 installs in a month
    • $2,500 bonus for 5+ installs in a month

  • Paid on installation completion - most projects go live in 30-45 days
  • Health benefits eligibility after 90 days

Realistic earnings:
  • Year 1 consultants: $80K-$120K
  • Experienced consultants: $150K+
  • No cap on commissions or bonuses

Why Consultants Choose SolarShoppers
  • Voted AVS Best - homeowners recognize and trust the name before you knock
  • Local installer, not a dealer We do our own installs, permitting, and PTO - your project never gets handed off to a stranger
  • Fast project timelines - most systems operational in 60-90 days, not 6 months
  • Exclusive equipment line not available through competing dealers in the valley
  • Real operations team behind every project, so you look good after the sale
  • Structured onboarding with product training, design training, and consultation shadowing

Background We're Looking For
This role fits people coming from consultative or relationship-based sales backgrounds. Industries that translate especially well:
  • HVAC sales
  • Insurance (especially in-home P&C or life)
  • Financial services / wealth advisory
  • Real estate
  • Roofing or home improvement
  • Solar (any role)
  • Mortgage / lending

You should have:
  • 2+ years of sales experience, ideally in a consultative or in-home setting
  • Strong listening, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfort prospecting and developing your own client pipeline
  • Self-direction, organization, and a long-term career mindset
  • Reliable transportation, valid California driver's license, professional appearance
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus, not required

Compensation: $75,000.00 - $500,000.00 per year
