An eligibility worker gathers information and performs interviews to determine whether a person is eligible for public assistance or access to social programs, such as food stamps, public housing, or grants. Your duties are to review financial and personal data, such as income, housing costs, utilities, and medical conditions, of those seeking social services. You also perform in-person or over-the-phone interviews. You then determine whether or not the applicants are eligible, and if they are, you authorize how much they are eligible to receive. You also provide referrals to other agencies and perform periodic checkups with clients to update information and reassess eligibility.
