Job description
The UNC School of Education, one of the longest-standing professional schools at the nation's first public university, ranks among the top schools of education in the U.S. and offers a full range of degree programs, from undergraduate to doctorate; forward-thinking certificate and licensure programs; and in-person, online, and HyFlex offerings. Faculty members generate knowledge across a number of fields, including human development, educational technology and entrepreneurship, teaching and learning, school counseling, school psychology, administration, educational policy and leadership, and more; they also prepare students to become the most highly effective educators to lead in classrooms, schools, districts and beyond, as well as future scholars and researchers.
This clinical faculty position is focused exclusively on teacher education and plays a central role in the clinical preparation of undergraduate elementary education and MAT candidates. Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating the clinical supervision system for the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and MAT programs in consultation with program directors and university clinical partnership and licensure professionals, including the recruitment, preparation, mentoring, and evaluation of clinical supervisors.
- Directly supervising student teachers, including conducting observations, facilitating reflective conferences, assessing candidate progress, supporting candidates' success in clinical placements, and informing program leadership about candidate performance.
- Collaborating with program faculty and staff to ensure alignment among coursework, clinical experiences, and state and national standards for teacher preparation.
- Collaborating with the School of Education's teacher education program directors and clinical partnership and licensure manager, as well as partner schools and districts, to support placement quality, communication, and ongoing partnerships.
- Supporting program assessment and continuous improvement efforts related to clinical experiences, including data collection, documentation, and accreditation related work (e.g., CAEP, state licensure requirements).
- Providing mentoring and instruction to teacher candidates, particularly during practica and student teaching experiences.
- Contributing to service activities that support the Elementary Education and MAT programs and the broader mission of the School of Education.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Professional experience in teacher education, including supervision of student teachers and/or coordination of clinical or field based experiences.
- Demonstrated expertise in clinical supervision, mentoring, and evaluation of teacher candidates in school based settings.
- Experience working collaboratively with school-based clinical partners, university-based licensure and partnership staff, and program faculty.
- Strong knowledge of elementary teaching standards, licensure requirements, and best practices in practice based teacher preparation.
- Evidence of effective communication and the ability to collaboratively manage complex clinical systems and partnerships.
- A commitment to preparing future elementary educators through high-quality, practice-based instruction and mentoring.
