The School of Architecture and Design (SOAD) invites applications for the position of Digital Technology Specialist. Based primarily on the Long Island (Old Westbury) campus, with periodic travel to the Manhattan campus, this position supports the school's growing ecosystem of digital fabrication, computational design, robotics, physical computing, artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, and emerging design technologies.

Reporting to the Director of Digital Technology and Fabrication, the Digital Technology Specialist will serve as a key technical and educational resource for students, faculty, and staff. The successful candidate will help advance innovative research, teaching, and creative practice through expertise in digital fabrication, computational workflows, robotics, electronics, and emerging design technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary technical specialist within NYIT's digital fabrication laboratories, supporting teaching, research, and interdisciplinary projects.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve digital fabrication systems including CNC milling, laser cutting, additive manufacturing, robotic fabrication, scanning technologies, and related equipment.
  • Support computational design workflows with particular emphasis on Rhino and Grasshopper, including parametric modeling, digital-to-physical fabrication, robotic control, simulation, and data-driven design processes.
  • Assist students and faculty with projects involving robotics, Arduino, sensors, embedded electronics, physical computing, interactive installations, and other emerging technologies.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, Design, Engineering, Digital Fabrication, Computational Design, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital fabrication, design technology, or related professional and/or academic environments.
  • Advanced proficiency with Rhino and Grasshopper.
  • Experience operating and supporting multiple fabrication technologies such as CNC milling, laser cutting, 3D printing, robotic systems, scanning technologies, or related equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and technical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to support students and faculty from concept development through fabrication and implementation.
  • Ability to lift equipment and materials and work in an active fabrication environment.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends in support of academic programming.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM workflows (RhinoCAM) and digital fabrication software.
  •  Experience with robotic fabrication systems and automation workflows.
  • Experience with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sensors, actuators, and physical computing systems.
  • Experience with AI-enabled design workflows, machine vision, reality capture, AR/VR/XR technologies, or interactive environments.
  • Experience teaching workshops, supporting research initiatives, or working within higher education environments.
