The Senior Manager, Software Engineering reports directly to the Senior Director, Digital Engineering at First Horizon. The position is responsible for the ongoing creation, modification and implementation of a modern and robust internet interface for the retail bank. that delivers internet systems to support the company’s business strategy and replace the current legacy retail interface. This role will be responsible for leading a software engineering team to build and deliver the new strategic interface. The senior manager will need to be knowledgeable in industry technology trends and practices. Further, the Senior Manager should have experience building strong engineering teams to deliver modern, high-quality software that delivers and outstanding user experience and meets product requirements.

The Senior Manager, Software Engineering will work closely with other Digital Engineering leads as well as middleware, security, and core systems leads to build and maintain a comprehensive set of Internet interface capabilities.  The Senior Manager will also advance appropriate development toolsets and system utilities and libraries. They will also be accountable for optimizing the Aurora software delivery process utilizing an agile methodology and containerized approach to development. All associated toolsets to design, build, manage, administer or operate the Internet interface software are also part of the engineering domain. Further, the Senior Manager should work closely with the architects, cloud services engineers, and middleware team to engineer integrated platforms that are secure, robust, and perform well under load. The Senior Manager should also work closely with technology operations team to properly implement effective monitoring, logging, and alerting capabilities and ensure high availability.

Together with other Digital Engineering leads, the Senior Manager, Software Engineering will be accountable for all internet interface system design, maintenance, and performance. These systems must be well-architected and designed to ensure robust performance and future productivity and reuse. 

The Senior Manager develops and enforces modern software engineering standards that enable exceptional functionality and performance/portability in a multi-cloud environment.

The Senior Manager will need to fully understand business needs as well as providing transparency to senior leadership while software is being developed and delivered. Further, the Senior Manager ensures high quality implementations that meet the rigorous First Horizon security, resiliency, recovery and availability requirements.

Given the scope of the role, the Senior Manager must be able to manage a broad and diverse team and establish clear vision and goals to attain top quartile engineering quality and results. In addition to being able to build a strong team, the Senior Manager must skillfully manage multiple suppliers providing a range of services to ensure proper value delivery to First Horizon, while also maintaining adequate long term control and efficiency. Occasional travel is expected for this role.

The position requires excellent leadership skills and organizational competencies as well as strong understanding of their area of technology, industry practices and trends, and the capability to implement the appropriate technology solutions for First Horizon.

  • Able to effectively negotiate and achieve proper service delivery or problem resolution
  • Must have excellent knowledge of current infrastructure areas (internet software, development methods, virtualization/clouds, project management)
  • Familiarity with financial industry services and their technologies: payments, compliance, accounts, onboarding, etc.

  • Superior knowledge of software engineering designs, disciplines, and implementation approaches as well as appropriate toolsets
  • Superior knowledge of program management disciplines and methodologies
  • Knowledge of team building and practices
  • Comprehensive knowledge of a internet interface software and design, as well as utilizing Cloud Services and CI/CD.
  • Superior ability to build and develop engineering talent
  • Excellent ability to manage software engineering teams, including budgets and multiple projects
  • Understands and ensures full responsibility to adeptly address operational risks including resiliency, recovery, availability and security

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics or Scientific field preferred. Strong experience and other relevant degree study areas (e.g. business or economics) will be considered. Advanced degree beneficial
  • Technical software engineering certifications viewed favorably
  • ITIL and/or Agile Certifications beneficial
  • 3+ years of experience as a senior leader of complex, large infrastructure teams
  • 7 years engineering experience, preferably at least five (5) years of experience in a complex, financial services corporate setting
  • Experience leading on new build, cloud native software projects
  • Experience working with diverse teams
