GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Durham County Library is seeking an innovative professional to lead the East Regional Library's Teen Services Unit. The Senior Librarian will oversee services, resources, and programming for teens at East Regional Library.
The ideal candidate will possess a passion for working with young people in libraries and their information needs. The Senior Librarian will be responsible for creating a safe and welcoming space for teens at the East Regional Library, with an emphasis on dynamic engagement of the community.
Work is performed with independence under the supervision of the East Regional Library Manager.
The position is based at the East Regional Library, but the selected candidate may be asked to work at other library locations.
Typical Schedule:
Monday: 11:45 a.m. - 8:15 p.m.
Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Thursday: 9:15 a.m. - 6:15 p.m.
Friday: 9:15 a.m. - 6:15 p.m.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule. This position includes one evening shift per week (Monday), every third Saturday, and every twelfth Sunday on a rotating basis (subject to change at any time).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Serves as the Teen Services Unit Manager at the East Regional Library.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates teen programming at the East Regional Library.
  • Performs professional and administrative library work and develops and provides library services and programs that support the library's strategic plan.
  • Responsible for training, supervision, and management of the Teen Services volunteers.
  • Oversees the library's teen space, young adult collection, teen-related programming and outreach.
  • Provides coverage at the information desk, cards and accounts desk, monitors LibChat and LibAnswers.
  • Assists library patrons with computer use and library technology.
  • Records program statistics; compiles and submits monthly reports.
  • Assists with preparation and monitoring of unit budget.
  • Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment by covering service points.
  • Serves as MOD and acts as primary back up to the Location Manager in their absence.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of library resources, procedures, and systems.
  • Analytical skills and knowledge of tools for evaluating the community and its information needs.
  • Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for a wide variety of customers.
  • Ability to plan innovative programs that adapt to meet the needs and skill level of customers.
  • Ability to use good judgement in daily services to analyze problems, recommend solutions and make decisions.
  • High degree of comfort learning new technologies.
  • Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school
  • One year of professional library or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • North Carolina Public Library Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • The ideal candidate should possess considerable public library experience and experience working with teens.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
