What does a data quality specialist do?

A Data Quality Specialist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of data within an organization. They analyze data sets, identify inconsistencies or errors, and implement processes to improve data quality. Their role often involves collaborating with IT teams, data analysts, and business stakeholders to set data standards and best practices. By maintaining high data quality, they help organizations make better, data-driven decisions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a data quality specialist?

To thrive as a Data Quality Specialist, you need a solid understanding of data management principles, data validation, and analytical skills, typically supported by a degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with data quality tools (such as Informatica, Talend, or IBM InfoSphere), SQL, and familiarity with data governance frameworks is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate, reliable data, enabling informed business decisions and maintaining organizational data integrity.

How does a data quality specialist interact with other departments?

Data Quality Specialists frequently collaborate with teams such as IT, data engineering, business analytics, and operations to develop, implement, and maintain data quality standards. They often organize meetings to clarify data requirements, resolve discrepancies, and ensure that all stakeholders understand and follow best practices for data input and management. This cross-functional communication is essential for identifying data quality issues early and implementing corrective measures, making the role both collaborative and central to an organization's data governance efforts.
