What is Quality Reporting?

Quality reporting refers to the process of collecting, analyzing, and submitting data about the quality of care or services provided by an organization, often in healthcare or manufacturing. The goal is to measure performance against established standards and identify areas for improvement. Quality reporting helps organizations ensure compliance with regulations, improve outcomes, and increase transparency for stakeholders. It typically involves standardized metrics and may be required by government agencies, accrediting bodies, or internal quality improvement programs.

What is the difference between Quality Reporting vs Quality Assurance Specialist?

AspectQuality ReportingQuality Assurance Specialist
CredentialsTypically requires knowledge of data analysis, reporting tools, and industry standardsRequires understanding of quality processes, standards, and often certifications like Six Sigma or ISO
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based, focusing on data collection, analysis, and report creationCan be office or manufacturing/clinical settings, involved in process audits and compliance
Industry UsageUsed across healthcare, manufacturing, and service industries for documenting quality metricsCommonly employed in manufacturing, healthcare, and software development to improve quality processes

While both roles focus on quality, Quality Reporting centers on analyzing and presenting data to measure performance, whereas Quality Assurance Specialists actively improve and maintain quality standards through audits and process improvements.

How does a Quality Reporting professional typically collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate data collection and reporting?

Quality Reporting professionals frequently work cross-functionally with clinical teams, IT staff, and compliance departments to gather and validate data needed for quality metrics. They often lead or participate in meetings to clarify data definitions, coordinate data extraction from electronic health records, and resolve discrepancies. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the accuracy of reports directly impacts regulatory compliance and organizational performance. Building strong working relationships helps streamline processes and ensure timely, reliable reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Quality Reporting, and why are they important?

To thrive in Quality Reporting, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in healthcare or data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with data reporting tools, quality measurement systems, and certifications such as Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) are typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration skills help you interpret data and work effectively with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital for ensuring accurate reporting, regulatory compliance, and continual improvement of organizational quality outcomes.

Job description

Quality Reporting Program Manager

Howard University Hospital | Washington, DC

Role Summary

As the Quality Reporting Program Manager at Howard University Hospital, you will own the integrity of HUH’s quality reporting program — managing the accurate collection, validation, and timely submission of quality data to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Leapfrog, The Joint Commission, and other public reporting bodies. Reporting to the Director of Quality and Strategic Improvement, you will partner with clinical leaders, abstractors, and executive stakeholders to translate performance data into actionable insights and drive measurable improvement on key metrics including mortality, sepsis, readmissions, and star ratings.

If you bring a clinical or quality analytics foundation, a fluency with CMS reporting programs, and a passion for using data to elevate patient outcomes, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact at one of the nation’s most storied academic medical centers.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage the accurate collection and timely submission of quality data to CMS, Leapfrog, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory and public reporting programs
  • Monitor and analyze hospital performance against national benchmarks and publicly reported data; identify opportunities for improvement on key metrics including mortality, sepsis, readmissions, and CMS star ratings
  • Develop quality performance dashboards, scorecards, and reports for executive leadership, service lines, and quality committees
  • Oversee abstraction processes and ensure ongoing adherence to measure specifications
  • Conduct internal audits and validation reviews to confirm data accuracy and reporting integrity
  • Translate quality data trends into specific, prioritized improvement recommendations for clinical and operational leaders
  • Maintain working knowledge of CMS Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR), Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP), Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), and emerging public reporting requirements
  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, Howard University Code of Ethics, Health Sciences Standards of Conduct, and HIPAA Privacy requirements
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patients, families, and staff

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Nursing (BSN), Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Health Informatics, or a related field
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of clinical or quality analytics experience in an acute care setting, with demonstrated experience in hospital quality reporting
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) at hire, or obtained within eighteen (18) months of hire
  • Working knowledge of CMS Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR), Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP), Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), and related public reporting programs
  • Proven ability to interpret reporting requirements from CMS and other regulatory agencies
  • Demonstrated proficiency with healthcare data analytics and reporting tools
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record systems
  • Strong project management, coordination, written, and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to detail and the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for leadership

What We Offer

  • Work-life balance
  • Recognition and rewards for professional expertise
  • Competitive, comprehensive benefit plans including health, disability, vacation, sick leave, and 403(b) retirement plan
  • Tuition remission at Howard University for you and/or eligible dependent children — up to two (2) courses per semester
  • A mission-driven environment rooted in over 150 years of excellence, service, and advocacy for the communities we serve

About Howard University Hospital

Howard University Hospital (HUH) is the nation’s only teaching hospital located on the campus of a historically Black university. Today, HUH continues its proud tradition of delivering exemplary, patient-centered, and culturally responsive care to the community, while providing exceptional learning and professional development opportunities for the next generation of healthcare professionals.
