| Aspect | Corrosion Engineer | Materials Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in corrosion engineering, materials science, or related field; certifications like NACE CIP | Bachelor's or higher in materials science, metallurgy, or engineering; certifications vary |
| Work Environment | Industrial plants, oil & gas, pipelines, maritime, power plants | Manufacturing, product development, research labs, construction |
| Industry Usage | Specialized in corrosion prevention, inspection, and mitigation | Focuses on material selection, testing, and development for various applications |
While both roles involve materials and engineering principles, Corrosion Engineers specialize in preventing and managing corrosion issues in industrial settings, whereas Materials Engineers focus on developing and testing materials for diverse applications. The roles often overlap but serve distinct purposes within engineering projects.
A corrosion engineer determines ways to repair or prevent corrosion on industrial machinery at a manufacturing plant or infrastructure projects, such as metal bridges, oil and gas pipelines, mines, and waste management facilities. Although closely related to metallurgy, corrosion engineering can address issues in non-metallic objects, such as ceramics, carbon, graphite, and cement. Your duties and responsibilities in this career include both fieldwork repair and lab work, where you try to determine ways to prevent corrosion on materials. In the field, you perform maintenance and repair work and collect data on the environmental conditions that affect corrosion.

Experience with vehicle level tests and various component-level industry tests/standards is preferred.Â
Responsible for collaboration and coordination with stakeholder and cross-functional teams to address corrosion risks, concerns and failures.
In-depth understanding of fundamental corrosion mechanisms with vehicle knowledge to help identify root cause, apply corrosion theory and provide practical technical solutions.
Manage end-to-end planning, coordination, preparation, documentation and execution of vehicle-level corrosion test programs.
Utilize tools like Confluence and Jira to document test plans, procedures, and results
Track test progress, timelines, and milestones, ensuring transparency and accountability within the team and cross functionally
Ensure external test facilities’ adherence to Rivian test protocols and capture critical data throughout the test
Log, categorize, and prioritize test findings and issues. Work closely with design and development teams to integrate test feedback into product improvements
Drive optimization efforts in testing procedures to reduce lead times and resource requirements
Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
5+ years of proven experience in failure analysis, vehicle testing, project management and stakeholder management, including applicable internship experience.
Experience in automotive testing procedures and standards.
Understanding of various vehicle systems, subsystem interactions and failure modes.
Knowledge of relevant automotive industry standards and regulations.Â
Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred: An understanding of corrosion engineering, vehicle diagnostics, materials science, protective coatings and surface treatments.
