What is a corrosion engineer?

A corrosion engineer determines ways to repair or prevent corrosion on industrial machinery at a manufacturing plant or infrastructure projects, such as metal bridges, oil and gas pipelines, mines, and waste management facilities. Although closely related to metallurgy, corrosion engineering can address issues in non-metallic objects, such as ceramics, carbon, graphite, and cement. Your duties and responsibilities in this career include both fieldwork repair and lab work, where you try to determine ways to prevent corrosion on materials. In the field, you perform maintenance and repair work and collect data on the environmental conditions that affect corrosion.
