The 4 C's of copywriting are Clarity, Conciseness, Credibility, and Consistency. These principles help copywriters create effective and persuasive content by ensuring the message is clear, brief, trustworthy, and uniform across all materials. Mastering these can improve the quality of marketing and advertising copy in a copywriting assistant role.

Is ChatGPT going to replace copywriting?

ChatGPT can assist copywriting assistants by generating drafts and ideas, but it does not replace the need for human creativity, strategic thinking, and understanding of brand voice. Copywriting remains a skill that benefits from human oversight to ensure accuracy, tone, and engagement. AI tools are used as support rather than complete replacements in the copywriting process.

Can you make $10,000 a month with copywriting?

Copywriting assistants typically do not earn $10,000 a month unless they have extensive experience, high-level skills, or work as freelancers with multiple clients. Most entry-level or standard copywriting roles offer lower salaries, though experienced copywriters or those with specialized expertise can reach higher income levels. Achieving such earnings often requires building a strong portfolio, networking, and possibly working independently or in high-paying niches.

To thrive as a Copywriting Assistant, you need strong writing and editing skills, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of marketing principles, often supported by a degree or coursework in English, Communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), digital marketing platforms, and proficiency in tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace are common requirements. Excellent organization, time management, and teamwork skills help set top candidates apart. These capabilities are crucial to delivering high-quality copy on deadline, collaborating effectively across departments, and supporting broader marketing objectives.

The 80/20 rule in copywriting suggests that 80% of results come from 20% of efforts, meaning focusing on the most impactful words, messages, or strategies can significantly improve effectiveness. Copywriters often prioritize key benefits and clear calls to action to maximize engagement and conversions.

Job description

Reports to: Director of Production

Department: Creative

Classification: Temporary

Duration of Role: 3 months

WHO WE ARE

Owen is a creative agency that drives design excellence and strategic impact across client programs. We elevate visual output through rigorous craft, innovation, and collaboration across multiple disciplines.

THE JOB

Senior Copywriters at Owen Jones are responsible for leading the creation of effective copy and messaging across a range of work for our clients. They are expected to be well-versed in many types of messaging and copywriting, and able to move between multiple clients, projects, and assignments while maintaining the high standards we set for our work.

This role is split evenly between two modes: creative concepting—campaigns, branded executions, and video scripts—and mid-funnel writing for B2B and B2C campaigns, where the focus is less on big ideas and more on clear, consistent execution.

AS A PERSON, YOU ARE:
  • You should be a team-focused, skilled, and imaginative thinker with an eye for detail. You’ll be expected to create excellent copy, but also to contribute at every stage of the project cycle and to consistently be looking for growth and learning opportunities for yourself and the agency. You'll be working alongside very talented and experienced thinkers, and your ability to both contribute ideas as well as execute the ideas of others will be essential to your success.

  • Honest, direct, and detailed communication.

  • Perpetually evolve your own skills; try new things and work inventively.

  • Use your unique experiences and skills to help push our creative executions.

  • Get to the heart of what it is you’re trying to solve; dig in deep and research.

  • Have the courage and wisdom to ask for help.

  • Be flexible and willing to assist in an array of tasks.

  • Attention to detail in everything you touch. The details are the end product.

  • Respect for your Owen teammates. Treat others as they would like to be treated. Lend a hand, pick up your slack, and don’t leave anyone behind. Remember that we will spend more waking time together than with almost anyone else, so make that relationship healthy and productive.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Understand and participate in all aspects of the messaging and copywriting needs, from initial positioning to executional writing.

  • Interpret copywriting briefs to understand project requirements and expectations.

  • Create both conceptual and executional copy that is effective and in-line with client voice and expectations.

  • Collaborate with the creative, accounts, and development teams on both large and small-scale projects.

  • Build the confidence and skills to communicate your ideas clearly to internal teams as well as to our clients.

  • Work closely with and take direction from project leads (Art Directors, CDs, etc.).

  • Work with the team to ensure all copy is accurate and complete prior to review.

  • Cultivate and maintain a thorough understanding of creative trends and the creative landscape, and bring this awareness to your writing.

  • Gain understanding and perspective of the cultural and competitive landscape that your work exists within.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following capabilities are required in order to perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations that do not create an undue burden on the agency are available to address the following requirements.

  • This role is expected to work in-person at our Portland, Oregon office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

  • Using standard office equipment, computers and related technology.

  • Certain activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.

  • Bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

  • Travel is not expected.

VALUES
  • Be Lean, Take Action: Think big, roll up your sleeves, and get the job done. Use process as an engine, not a brake.

  • Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say: Connect openly, share ideas honestly, and embrace collaboration without ego.

  • Show Up Fully: Bring your whole self to work — your perspective, background, and experiences — and make space for others to do the same.

INCLUSION AND ENCOURAGEMENT

We know that experience can show up in many ways, and we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications. If you're passionate about strategy, eager to grow, and excited to contribute your perspective, we'd love to hear from you.

At Owen, we believe the best ideas come from bringing together diverse voices, experiences, and ways of thinking. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are not checkboxes—they are essential to how we work, collaborate, and create. We are committed to fostering an environment where all employees can thrive and where every individual is treated with respect and dignity.

Owen is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. We provide reasonable accommodations throughout the hiring process for applicants with disabilities. If you require an accommodation, please contact Human Resources at HR@Thesis.Agency.
