What is a copy editor?

As a copy editor, your responsibilities and duties include reviewing written material, called copy, before it is put into print or posted online. You examine the material for grammar and spelling mistakes and structural errors. You also ensure that the tone, tense, and style meet the guidelines set out by the publisher. If you work in journalism for the copy desk of a news organization, you not only proofread but also fact check and make sure there is no slanderous content. You also check headlines to ensure they are attention grabbing and grammatically correct.

What does a copy editor do?

A copy editor is responsible for reviewing and correcting written material to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency. They check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style errors, and may also verify facts and improve the flow of the text. Copy editors work with writers and other editors to polish content before publication, whether it's for books, magazines, websites, or other media. Their goal is to enhance the readability and professionalism of the final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copy editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copy Editor, you need a strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word's track changes, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help Copy Editors excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring error-free, clear, and consistent content that meets publication standards and deadlines.

How do copy editors typically collaborate with writers and other editorial team members during the editing process?

Copy editors work closely with writers to clarify meaning, improve readability, and ensure consistency in style and tone. They often communicate suggested changes and questions through tracked edits or comments, fostering open dialogue to refine the content. Collaboration with other editorial team members, such as fact-checkers or managing editors, is also common to ensure accuracy and adherence to publication standards. Regular meetings and digital collaboration tools help maintain workflow efficiency and resolve any editorial concerns promptly.

What is the difference between Copy Editor vs Proofreader?

AspectCopy EditorProofreader

While both Copy Editors and Proofreaders work to improve written content, Copy Editors focus on refining style, structure, and clarity during the editing process. Proofreaders primarily ensure the final text is free of grammatical and typographical errors before publication. Understanding these roles helps in selecting the right professional for your publishing needs.

Are copy editors still in demand?

Copy editors remain in demand across publishing, media, and corporate sectors due to the ongoing need for clear, accurate content. Strong editing skills, familiarity with style guides, and proficiency with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Adobe InCopy enhance job prospects in this field.

How much does a copy editor make?

The average salary for a copy editor in the United States ranges from $40,000 to $65,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions typically start around $35,000, while experienced editors or those working in specialized fields can earn over $70,000. Many copy editors also work freelance or remotely, which can affect income levels.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an AI Video Editor based in Netherlands.

As an AI Video Editor, you will transform creative briefs into high-performing video ads for paid social platforms. You will combine advanced AI video-generation workflows with strong editing and direct-response creative skills to produce compelling UGC-style, VSL, and short-form advertising content. Working closely with a Senior Creative Strategist, you will turn scripts, concepts, and references into polished, ready-to-launch creative assets. The role is highly execution-focused, with an emphasis on speed, quality, testing, and continuous iteration. You will experiment with AI-generated footage, avatars, product visuals, voiceovers, motion graphics, and other modern production techniques. Your work will directly support performance marketing efforts across channels such as Meta and TikTok. This is an ideal opportunity for an editor who enjoys producing multiple creative variations at scale and using performance insights to make each iteration stronger.

Accountabilities:
  • Create high-performing video advertisements for Meta, TikTok, and other paid social and acquisition channels.
  • Generate AI-powered video footage, UGC-style content, product visuals, avatars, voiceovers, and supporting creative assets using modern AI production tools.
  • Edit raw footage and AI-generated assets into polished UGC, direct-response, VSL, and short-form advertising creatives.
  • Develop multiple hooks, openings, cuts, pacing variations, and creative iterations from the same underlying concept.
  • Add captions, motion graphics, sound design, B-roll, transitions, product callouts, and other finishing elements that strengthen the creative.
  • Translate scripts, references, and detailed creative briefs into engaging, launch-ready video ads.
  • Produce multiple high-quality creative variations each week to support continuous testing and experimentation.
  • Adapt winning concepts into new versions while preserving the core creative strategy and messaging.
  • Apply performance feedback and A/B testing insights to improve future iterations and creative output.
  • Maintain a fast, organized, and repeatable production workflow while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Work closely with creative strategy and performance marketing stakeholders while remaining focused on execution rather than media buying or overall campaign strategy.
Requirements:
  • Proven hands-on experience creating paid social video advertisements for Meta, TikTok, or comparable acquisition platforms.
  • Experience working with DTC, e-commerce, direct-response, or performance marketing content.
  • A portfolio featuring real paid advertisements that have been used or tested in acquisition campaigns.
  • Strong practical experience with AI video-generation workflows and modern AI creative tools.
  • Hands-on experience with Higgsfield is highly preferred, along with familiarity with platforms such as Kling, Veo, Seedance, Runway, HeyGen, ElevenLabs, or similar tools.
  • Strong editing capabilities using Premiere Pro, After Effects, CapCut, or comparable professional video-editing software.
  • Demonstrated experience creating UGC-style advertising content.
  • Experience producing VSL or Video Sales Letter creatives is a strong advantage.
  • Ability to produce and iterate creative assets at high volume without compromising quality.
  • Strong understanding of performance creative principles, including hooks, pacing, audience retention, CTAs, and conversion-focused editing.
  • Ability to follow creative direction and detailed briefs accurately while making strong execution-level decisions.
  • Experience collaborating with performance marketers, media buyers, creative strategists, or growth teams is highly valued.
  • Experience working with scaled DTC brands or performance creative agencies is an advantage.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, speed of execution, and ability to manage multiple creative deliverables simultaneously.
  • A portfolio demonstrating performance advertising is essential; experience focused primarily on cinematic production, traditional videography, podcasts, music videos, branding, or organic social content is less relevant.
Benefits:
  • Full-time, remote position within Europe.
  • Opportunity to work at the intersection of AI video generation, creative production, and performance marketing.
  • Hands-on exposure to rapidly evolving AI video and creative-production technologies.
  • High-volume creative environment with continuous opportunities to test new concepts, formats, hooks, and production techniques.
  • Opportunity to work closely with experienced creative strategy and performance marketing professionals.
  • Direct impact on paid-social performance through creative experimentation and iteration.
  • Opportunity to develop advanced expertise in AI-first UGC, VSL, and direct-response advertising.
  • Fast-paced, execution-focused environment suited to editors who enjoy producing and refining multiple creative variations.
  • Potential for professional growth as AI-powered creative production workflows continue to evolve.
