A Contract Recruiter works closely with hiring managers and HR teams to understand the specific needs and requirements for each open position. They often conduct intake meetings to define the ideal candidate profile, clarify timelines, and set expectations. Throughout the search, Contract Recruiters provide regular updates, coordinate interviews, and gather feedback from stakeholders to ensure alignment and a streamlined hiring process. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as contract recruiters must quickly adapt to different teams and company cultures.

What does a contract recruiter do?

A contract recruiter is responsible for sourcing, screening, and hiring temporary or project-based candidates for organizations. They often work with staffing agencies or internal HR teams to fill specific roles quickly, using tools like applicant tracking systems and maintaining relationships with potential candidates. Their work typically involves managing the recruitment process from job posting to onboarding within a set contract period.

How much do recruiters make per contract?

Contract recruiters typically earn between $20 and $60 per hour, depending on experience, industry, and location. Some may work on a fixed project fee or a percentage of the candidate's first-year salary, especially in specialized fields or high-demand markets.

What are contract recruiters?

Contract recruiters are professionals hired on a temporary basis to help organizations find and hire qualified candidates for open positions. Unlike permanent, in-house recruiters, contract recruiters typically work for a set period or until specific hiring goals are met. They may be brought in during periods of rapid growth, seasonal hiring needs, or to fill specialized roles. Contract recruiters often work independently or through staffing agencies and can provide expertise in sourcing, screening, and interviewing candidates.

What is the 3 month rule for jobs?

The 3 month rule for jobs generally refers to the idea that employers prefer candidates to stay in a position for at least three months before considering a move or change. For contract recruiters, this period often aligns with the typical duration of short-term contracts, allowing time to evaluate candidate fit and performance before transitioning or extending assignments.

What Is a Contract Recruiter?

Contract recruiters work for their clients as independent contractors rather than in-house HR employees. They may be self-employed or work for a recruiting firm. As a contract recruiter, your responsibilities and duties include searching for the most qualified candidates for a job, conducting initial interviews, and serving as the liaison between the candidate and the hiring manager through contract signing. You also help with resumes and coach prospective hires for their interviews. You may work with the HR team on the hiring side as well as with the prospective employee.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Recruiter, you need expertise in talent sourcing, candidate evaluation, and a solid understanding of recruitment processes, typically supported by experience in HR or staffing. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), recruiting platforms like LinkedIn Recruiter, and sometimes relevant certifications such as AIRS or SHRM are beneficial. Exceptional interpersonal skills, adaptability, and strong organizational abilities help you build relationships and manage multiple requisitions efficiently. These skills ensure you can quickly identify and secure top talent to meet client needs in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.

Job description

ABOUT RETELL AI

Retell AI is using first principles to reimagine the call center with cutting-edge voice AI.

Thousands of companies now utilize Retell’s AI voice agents to handle sales, support, and logistics calls that once required large teams of human agents. Backed by Y Combinator, Alt Capital, and other leading investors, we have scaled to $60M ARR with a team of 40 people, up from $5M at the start of 2025.

Our vision for 2026 is to build a modern CX platform where entire contact centers are powered by AI. Instead of basic automation that needs constant human tuning, we’re creating intelligent AI “workers” that can act as frontline agents, QA analysts, and managers, continuously executing, monitoring, and improving customer interactions.

We’re growing quickly and looking for ambitious builders who want to tackle hard problems, move fast, and have real impact at one of the fastest-growing AI startups.

Let’s build the future together.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We\'re looking for a Contract Recruiter to help scale hiring across technical and go-to-market teams. You\'ll partner closely with hiring managers and leadership to identify, engage, and close exceptional talent while helping us maintain a high hiring bar during a period of rapid growth.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced startup environments, can independently drive searches from kickoff through offer stage, and enjoys working on difficult-to-fill roles.

You\'ll play a critical role in helping Retell attract world-class talent across engineering, product, AI/ML, sales, customer success, and operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Partner with hiring managers to understand hiring needs and build sourcing strategies

  • Source and engage high-quality candidates through LinkedIn, referrals, and outbound recruiting efforts

  • Manage candidates throughout the interview process and ensure an exceptional candidate experience

  • Conduct recruiter screens and assess candidate fit

  • Coordinate closely with interviewers and hiring managers to drive efficient hiring decisions

  • Track recruiting activity and maintain accurate data within the ATS

  • Develop creative approaches to attract top talent in highly competitive markets

  • Help improve recruiting processes, interview workflows, and hiring operations

YOU MIGHT THRIVE IF
  • You have 3+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience

  • You have experience recruiting for technical, product, AI/ML, or GTM roles

  • You are highly organized and can manage multiple searches simultaneously

  • You are proactive, resourceful, and comfortable operating with limited structure

  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills

  • You enjoy building relationships with candidates and hiring managers

  • You are excited about startups and high-growth environments

  • You have a track record of successfully filling difficult or specialized roles

JOB DETAILS
  • Compensation: $35–$45 USD per hour + Placement Bonus

  • Location: Fully Remote (can work anywhere in the world)

  • Engagement Type: Independent Contractor (1099)

  • Hours: 40 hours per week depending on hiring volume - Must be available and able to work primarily during Pacific Time (PT/PST) business hours to collaborate closely with hiring managers and interview teams.

  • Contract Length: Initial 3–6 month engagement with potential extension based on business needs and performance

We\'re looking for someone who can ramp quickly, operate autonomously, and help us continue building one of the best teams in AI.
