What is a Contract Game Developer job?

A Contract Game Developer is a freelance or temporary professional hired to develop video games for a specific project or duration. They typically work on programming, game mechanics, optimization, or other development tasks. Unlike full-time employees, contract developers work on short-term agreements and may collaborate with multiple studios or clients. This role offers flexibility but may require finding new contracts regularly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Game Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Game Developer, you need a solid background in programming languages such as C++, C#, or JavaScript, and experience in game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), debugging tools, and relevant certifications or portfolios showcasing shipped games are highly valued. Strong time management, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help developers excel, especially when working remotely or with diverse teams. These competencies enable contract game developers to deliver high-quality projects on tight deadlines, adapt to different workflows, and collaborate efficiently with clients and teammates.

What types of projects or tasks can a Contract Game Developer expect to work on?

As a Contract Game Developer, you may be involved in a wide range of tasks depending on the studio's needs, such as designing new game features, fixing bugs, optimizing performance, or creating game prototypes. You'll likely collaborate closely with artists, designers, and other developers, often joining existing teams to bring specialized expertise or cover resource gaps. This role offers exposure to different genres and technologies, which can greatly broaden your experience and skill set as you work with multiple clients.

Job description

The FreedomPay Commerce Platform is the technology of choice for many of the largest companies across the globe in retail, hospitality, lodging, gaming, sports and entertainment, foodservice, education, healthcare and financial services.ย  FreedomPayโ€™s technology has been purposely built to deliver rock solid performance in the highly complex environment of global commerce. The company maintains a world-class security environment and was first to earn the coveted validation by the PCI Security Standards Council against Point-to-Point Encryption with EMV standard in North America. FreedomPayโ€™s robust solutions across payments, security, identity and data analytics are available in-store, online and on-mobile and are supported by rapid API adoption. The award winning FreedomPay Commerce Platform operates on a single, unified technology stack across multiple continents allowing enterprises to deliver a consistent, repeatable experience on a global scale.ย  FreedomPay is a fast paced, high growth company with a great culture with competitive benefits and compensation with a business casual atmosphere.

The Technical Product Manager (TPM) is a deeply technical role focused on defining the right problems, shaping high-quality product requirements, and partnering with engineering to deliver customer-impacting solutions.

This role operates within an AI-enabled product model, where initial requirements and workflows may be generated by AI. The TPM is responsible for validating, refining, and ensuring those outputs are accurate, complete, and aligned with both technical and business realities.

You will own products within FreedomPayโ€™s data and AI portfolio, including business intelligence, embedded reporting, and AI-powered features built on top of our commerce data platform. This role requires strong product judgment, technical depth, and a clear understanding of how data structures drive product outcomes.

This is not a project or delivery role. It is focused on product ownership, technical decision-making, and delivering meaningful customer value.

Job Responsibilities
  • Own specific product lines, features, or datasets within a defined domain
  • Define product strategy, roadmap, and lifecycle across data and AI-driven products
  • Validate incoming requests from sales, engineering, and customers, separating true problems from noise
  • Partner directly with customers and internal stakeholders to understand needs, constraints, and use cases
  • Refine AI-generated product requirements and workflows for accuracy, completeness, and usability
  • Translate complex business problems into structured workflows, data models, and decision logic
  • Produce clear, implementation-ready product specifications, including requirements, data contracts, and acceptance criteria
  • Ensure requirements reflect system architecture, dependencies, integrations, and real-world constraints
  • Participate in architecture and design discussions, making informed technical tradeoffs
  • Own embedded BI and reporting capabilities, ensuring dashboards and data products are accurate, performant, and valuable
  • Ensure strong data governance, including semantic consistency, data quality, and reliability across product surfaces
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, data, and business teams to deliver high-quality product outcomes
  • Stay engaged throughout execution to resolve questions, guide decisions, and ensure alignment to product intent
  • Incorporate production feedback and customer insights into future product iterations
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in product management or equivalent experience in engineering, data, or analytics roles
  • Strong technical background with the ability to understand system architecture, APIs, and integrations
  • Proficiency in SQL and the ability to work directly with data models, schemas, and table-level structures
  • Demonstrated ability to translate customer and business needs into clear, actionable product requirements
  • Experience working closely with engineering and data teams on technical or platform-based products
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make and own decisions in high-autonomy environments
  • Experience engaging with customers or external stakeholders in a technical capacity
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in payments, fintech, or enterprise SaaS environments
  • Experience building or shipping data products, analytics platforms, or BI/reporting solutions
  • Familiarity with modern data platforms (such as Snowflake) and BI tools (such as Sigma)
  • Experience working in AI-enabled or automation-driven product environments
  • Strong understanding of AI product principles, including semantics, grounding, and data quality
  • Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks or orchestration tools (such as LangChain or similar)
  • Experience with data governance, semantic modeling, and data quality frameworks
  • Strong ability to identify gaps, edge cases, and risks in product or technical designs
  • Experience supporting complex customer or partner integrations
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams without owning delivery execution
As the fastest growing commerce company in the industry, we offer the opportunity for tremendous upward mobility within the company as well as development and professional growth opportunities. FreedomPay's fulltime roles provide exceptional benefits including medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage, Life Insurance, Retirement Plans with company match, commission sharing plan, flexible hybrid working environment, and great parental and other leave programs. All positions must be able to successfully pass a background check as well as a credit check.
