What does a mobile game developer do?

A Mobile Game Developer is responsible for designing, building, testing, and maintaining games for mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. They use programming languages like C#, Java, or Swift along with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. In addition to coding, they often collaborate with artists, designers, and other team members to create engaging and interactive gaming experiences. Their work also includes optimizing games for performance on various devices and implementing features like in-app purchases or social integration.

What does a mobile game developer do?

As a mobile game developer, your job is to help program a game app for people to use on a phone, tablet, or another mobile game player. In this role, you may help set up the intended user experience, coordinate with content providers, and test the software to ensure that all aspects function as intended. Many of the duties and responsibilities of this job depend on the employer. For example, some mobile game developers perform almost all tasks, while others focus on specific parts of the software in order to help maximize content delivery speeds. Many people in this industry work out of offices, but it is possible to work as a remote mobile game developer, especially if you have a high-speed internet connection that can support large game file transfers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile game developer?

To thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C#, C++, or Java), a solid grasp of game design principles, and experience with mobile platforms, typically supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and knowledge of version control systems like Git, are standard technical requirements. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that help deliver engaging user experiences and overcome development challenges. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality, innovative games that perform well in a competitive and rapidly evolving market.

What are some common challenges mobile game developers face when optimizing games for different devices?

Mobile Game Developers often encounter challenges in ensuring their games run smoothly across a wide variety of devices with different screen sizes, operating systems, and hardware capabilities. Balancing high-quality graphics with performance, especially on lower-end devices, requires careful optimization and thorough testing. Developers also need to stay updated with frequent OS updates and new device releases, which can affect game compatibility and user experience. Collaboration with designers and QA testers is crucial to address these challenges effectively.

Unity Developer (m/f/d) - Big Farm Homestead

OR • On-site

Full-time

PTO

Posted 8 days ago

Job description

Our Big Farm Homestead team is looking for a Unity Developer who loves building things that players actually get their hands on. You will work on the client side of a complex live mobile game, turning game design ideas into features, improvements, refactoring and LiveOps content that ship. Expect to spend your days in Unity3D, close to both the code and the content: integrating assets, tuning performance on mobile, and writing clean, well structured code your teammates enjoy working with. BFH shares its codebase and many systems with our sister game Sunshine Island, so you will collaborate closely with the Sunshine Island team, learn from what they build, and feed your own solutions back the other way.
Please note: we can only consider candidates based in Europe, working in a timezone similar to Germany (CET/CEST).
YOUR MISSION
  • Take an active part in game creation and specification, especially in the client development of complex multiplayer mobile games
  • Help keep our players happy by developing and delivering high quality LiveOps content as part of a dedicated and passionate LiveOps team
  • Deliver production ready, well structured code that holds up in a long running live game
  • Find and propose the best suited architecture for new features, and weigh the trade offs with your team
  • Help create and improve our asset workflows
  • Collaborate in the development of innovative new games in interdisciplinary and international teams, and share your knowledge with your colleagues
YOUR BACKSTORY
  • Professional experience in games development, ideally including a commercially released Unity title. We know projects get cancelled, so substantial time in production on a title that never shipped counts too
  • Solid knowledge of the Unity game engine for 3D URP games and UGUI
  • Confident with Git or a comparable version control system as part of your daily workflow
  • Good grasp of OOP principles and software architecture, and you have at least come across data oriented design
  • A basic understanding of cross-platform development, first exposure to iOS and Android mobile development is a plus
  • Familiarity with asset management and Addressables
  • Experience with client server applications is a plus
  • Curiosity about agile development methods
  • You solve problems effectively and proactively, and speak up early when something is off
  • You enjoy working in an international team, communicate comfortably in English, and are happy being present and chatty on Discord throughout your working day
WHY JOIN US?
  • Full flexibility: Work remotely or come to our modern office in Hamburg city center close to the Alster
  • Work-life balance: Competitive annual leave and flexible working hours
  • Join a supportive team in a pragmatic, yet challenging environment, with flat hierarchies and state-of-the-art technologies
  • Work in a multicultural environment with multidisciplinary and experienced colleagues from the entire product lifecycle in a culture of continuous development and learning opportunities
  • Find sparring partners within game design
  • Team building: Strong collaboration between the teams, regular studio events onsite, snacks and drinks available at the office
  • Contribution to public transport ticket (Deutschlandticket) for Germany-based staff
