Mobile game development is accessible to individuals of all ages, and many successful developers start later in life. Skills such as programming, design, and familiarity with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine can be learned at any age, and experience from other fields can be an asset in game development careers.

What does a Mobile Game Developer do?

A Mobile Game Developer is responsible for designing, building, testing, and maintaining games for mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. They use programming languages like C#, Java, or Swift along with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. In addition to coding, they often collaborate with artists, designers, and other team members to create engaging and interactive gaming experiences. Their work also includes optimizing games for performance on various devices and implementing features like in-app purchases or social integration.

What are some common challenges Mobile Game Developers face when optimizing games for different devices?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C#, C++, or Java), a solid grasp of game design principles, and experience with mobile platforms, typically supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and knowledge of version control systems like Git, are standard technical requirements. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that help deliver engaging user experiences and overcome development challenges. Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

At Netflix, we have an insatiable desire to continually improve our products and deliver new experiences to delight and entertain our quickly growing membership. Now, we are making game night a whole lot easier by bringing Netflix Games to the biggest screen in the house. We are building a future where playing a game with friends and family requires no extra hardware. Just your TV, Netflix, and your phone.

As a Product Manager for TV as a Platform, you will drive the end-to-end cloud gaming experience on connected TVs. You will own the ambitious roadmap for our "mobile-as-a-controller" experience, ensuring that going from watching a hit show to playing a game feels as effortless as hitting "Play." You will sit at the intersection of streaming technology, 10-foot UI design, and interactive gameplay, ensuring our members experience seamless, high-quality entertainment.

What You Will Do:

  • Own the TV Games Product Strategy: Develop and execute the product roadmap for playing cloud-streamed games on connected TVs, focusing on creating frictionless, "zero-setup" experiences for our members.

  • Innovate the Mobile Controller Experience: Lead the development of the Netflix game controller app/feature. You will define how a user's mobile phone transforms into a dynamic, intuitive gamepad for living room play, supporting everything from solo adventures to 8-player party games like Boggle Party and Pictionary.

  • Bridge Viewing and Playing: Create seamless user flows that allow members to fluidly transition from watching Netflix content (e.g., Knives Out) to playing a related game (e.g., Dead Man's Party) without ever leaving the Netflix ecosystem.

  • Champion Quality of Experience (QoE): Partner closely with cloud gaming engineering and streaming technology teams to optimize latency, input lag, and video fidelity. You will define the metrics for a successful, high-quality TV gaming session and relentlessly drive improvements.

  • Design for the Living Room: Collaborate with Product Designers to optimize the "10-foot UI" for game discovery, multiplayer onboarding, and in-game overlays on the TV.

  • Lead Cross-Functional Execution: Act as the central node between Game Studios, Platform Engineering, Mobile App teams, and Data Science to deliver complex, multi-device features on time and at scale.

Requirements:

  • 5-8+ years of experience in product management, with a proven track record of shipping complex, consumer-facing software.

  • Direct experience with Connected TV (CTV) platforms (e.g., Roku, tvOS, Android TV, Smart TVs), cloud gaming platforms, or multi-device ecosystem products.

  • A deep understanding of mobile app product development (iOS/Android) and how to leverage native mobile capabilities (haptics, gyroscopes, touch interfaces) to drive user engagement.

  • Technical background or strong understanding of video streaming technologies, real-time networking, and cloud computing principles.

  • A history of achieving product outcomes through user testing, rapid prototyping, and data-driven decision-making.

  • Passion for the digital gaming space, particularly local multiplayer, social deduction, and "party" game genres that bring people together in the living room.

Does this sound uncomfortably exciting? Please don't self-select out; let's figure it out together. We'd love to talk to you!

Location: West Coast, with some travel to Los Angeles or Los Gatos, CA as needed
