JOB TITLE: 

Branding Iron Copy Editor

JOB PURPOSE: 

The Branding Iron Copy Editor is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, clarity, consistency, and quality of content published in the Branding Iron print edition and digital platforms. The Copy Editor reviews stories for grammar, spelling, AP style, factual accuracy, and readability while helping maintain editorial standards and publication deadlines. This position is responsible for laying out the print editions.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Edit news, sports, features, opinion, and multimedia content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and AP style. 
  2. Verify names, titles, dates, facts, and other information for accuracy. 
  3. Proofread pages and digital content before publication. 
  4. Write headlines, captions, cutlines, and other display copy as needed. 
  5. Collaborate with editors, writers, designers, and digital staff to maintain publication quality.
  6. Assist with page proofing and final review of print and online content. 
  7. Meet deadlines and attend editorial meetings and training sessions. 
  8. Maintain regular office hours as assigned. Must be available Sunday and Wednesday nights for publication production. 
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Must be enrolled as a University of Wyoming student. 
  2. Working knowledge of AP Style or willingness to learn. 
  3. Attention to detail and ability to identify errors and inconsistencies. 
  4. Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced newsroom environment. 
  5. Prior experience in journalism, editing, student media, or related coursework is preferred but not required.
  6. Must be available for publication deadlines on Sundays and Wednesday nights.
  7. Must be available Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for training.

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
