What is a contract base job?

Contract base jobs are employment positions where individuals are hired for a specific period or project, rather than as permanent employees. These contracts outline the duration, pay, and responsibilities, and end once the project is complete or the contract expires. Contract-based positions are common in industries such as IT, construction, healthcare, and consulting, offering flexibility for both employers and workers. They often do not include benefits like health insurance or paid leave, but can provide higher pay rates or specialized experience. Many professionals choose contract work for its flexibility and variety of opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Manager, you typically need expertise in contract law, negotiation, risk management, and a relevant degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with contract management software, compliance systems, and legal documentation tools is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders are crucial soft skills. These qualifications help ensure contracts are compliant, risks are mitigated, and business relationships are managed effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on a contract basis, and how can they be managed?

Contract-based professionals often navigate challenges such as fluctuating workloads, uncertainty regarding contract renewal, and integrating quickly into new teams or projects. Managing these challenges involves proactive communication with clients, clear understanding of contract terms, and building a reputation for reliability and adaptability. Additionally, maintaining a strong professional network and continuously updating skills can help contract workers secure consistent opportunities and thrive in varied work environments.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We're hiring experienced journeyman HVAC A/C Equipment Mechanics to support the North Texas VA Medical Center in Dallas, TX. This is a long-term federal contract position supporting America's Veterans — you'll work alongside VA engineering staff maintaining mission-critical HVAC and refrigeration systems at one of the nation's premier VA Medical Centers.

WHY THIS OPPORTUNITY STANDS OUT

  • Top-tier pay: $42.00 – $48.00/hr based on experience and certifications — well above the DFW-area market
  • Long-term stability: multi-year federal contract, base period plus 4 option periods
  • Meaningful work: serve America's Veterans at a nationally recognized VA Medical Center
  • Monday–Friday day shift only — no nights, no weekends, no on-call rotation
  • Federal holidays observed — no holiday work required

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Install, operate, repair, and maintain refrigeration, A/C, heating, and ventilation systems
  • Service complex equipment up to 300 HP and large central systems up to 500 tons
  • Perform major and minor repairs, troubleshoot refrigerant leaks, and adjust controls
  • Service compressors and chemically treat HVAC water systems
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic control systems
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Perform daily check-ins/check-outs and submit service logs to the VA COR
  • Supervise helpers as needed and coordinate daily tasks with VA personnel

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS — ALL REQUIRED

  • Active State of Texas HVAC License
  • Minimum 4 years of journeyman-level refrigeration and A/C trade experience
  • Siemens building controls training/certification
  • OSHA certification (confined space, electrical safety, hazardous environments)
  • Ability to read blueprints and mechanical/electrical schematics
  • Ability to pass a VA background investigation prior to start
  • VA Cyber Security Awareness training (completed prior to or upon start)
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor — lifting, bending, working in cramped and outdoor environments

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in a hospital, VA, or other critical infrastructure environment
  • Experience with chilled water systems, central plant operations, and pneumatic controls
  • EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification
  • NATE certification or equivalent

WORK CONDITIONS & PPE

All mechanics must wear the following PPE at all times on site:

  • Arc-rated or natural fiber long pants and long-sleeve shirt
  • OSHA-approved steel-toed work boots (ANSI Z41.1-1967 compliant)
  • Hearing protection and eye protection

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with exposure to electrical hazards, confined spaces, and extreme temperatures.

COMPENSATION

  • $42.00 – $48.00/hr — top-of-market pay for credentialed journeyman mechanics in DFW
  • Stable, long-term federal contract — base period plus up to 4 option periods
  • Monday–Friday day shift — consistent schedule, no on-call
