Job description

This is a newly created role with significant opportunity for the right individual to make a direct impact on the organization. The Controller will play a critical role in developing, improving, and maintaining all financial reporting and accounting processes required to support ownership, leadership, banking relationships, and external CPA firms.

We are seeking a highly motivated, hands-on accounting professional with strong construction accounting experience and a deep understanding of Percentage of Completion (POC) accounting methodologies.

The ideal candidate may currently be an Accounting Manager, Senior Construction Accountant, or Assistant Controller at a construction company and is ready to step into a Controller-level leadership role.

This position is not designed for someone who wants to simply supervise from a distance. We are looking for a roll-up-your-sleeves leader who understands the big picture, executes at a high level, and thrives in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

Position Overview:

The Construction Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions for CAET PMC while partnering closely with ownership and external CPA firms on strategic initiatives, including the divestiture of the construction entity from the company’s professional services entity so it may operate as a standalone business.

This role requires strong General Ledger expertise, advanced job costing knowledge, and the ability to analyze operational performance across projects, divisions, labor, and overhead allocations.

All company entities currently utilize QuickBooks Online, and extensive experience with QuickBooks Online is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounting operations for the construction entity
  • Manage and maintain accurate General Ledger reporting and account reconciliations
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Prepare accurate financial statements and operational reports
  • Manage Percentage of Completion (POC) accounting and reporting
  • Oversee:
    • Job costing
    • WIP reporting
    • Revenue recognition
    • Labor burden allocations
    • Divisional cost allocations
    • Overhead allocations
  • Analyze project profitability and identify:
    • Margin erosion
    • Cost overruns
    • Loss leader projects
    • Operational inefficiencies
  • Develop and maintain reporting packages for:
    • Ownership and leadership
    • Banking institutions
    • External CPA firms
  • Work directly with the company’s external CPA to support the separation/divestiture of the construction entity into a standalone company
  • Assist in developing scalable accounting procedures, controls, and reporting structures as the company continues to grow
  • Support operational leadership with financial insight and performance analysis
  • Ensure accounting processes remain accurate, organized, and audit-ready

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of accounting experience within the construction industry
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in accounting or similar discipline from an accredited 4-year University
  • Strong experience with:
    • Percentage of Completion accounting
    • Construction job costing
    • WIP schedules
    • Revenue recognition
    • General Ledger management
    • Financial reporting
  • Advanced QuickBooks Online experience REQUIRED
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as:
    • Accounting Manager
    • Assistant Controller
    • Senior Construction Accountant
  • Experience working in a high-growth construction environment
  • Experience with entity restructuring or operational separation projects
  • Experience working directly with external CPA firms and banking relationships
  • MBA, CPA or CPA-track preferred but not required
  • Multi-entity accounting experience is a plus

What We’re Looking For:

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is self-motivated and driven
  • Understands both accounting and operations
  • Can identify problems and implement solutions
  • Takes ownership without needing constant direction
  • Understands how construction financials impact operational performance
  • Is comfortable building processes and reporting systems from the ground up
  • Wants to grow with a rapidly expanding company

This is a high-visibility role with direct interaction with ownership and leadership. The right candidate will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the future growth and structure of the company.
