What is a configuration job?

Configuration jobs involve setting up, customizing, and maintaining systems, software, or hardware to ensure they meet specific requirements and function efficiently. Professionals in configuration roles manage the setup of IT systems, monitor changes, and implement updates to ensure that everything operates smoothly and securely. These jobs are critical in technology and engineering environments where precise system settings and documentation are essential for performance and compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a configuration manager?

To thrive as a Configuration Manager, you need expertise in configuration management processes, change control, and documentation, usually supported by a degree in information technology or engineering. Familiarity with tools like ServiceNow, Jira, or IBM Rational, and certifications such as ITIL or CMII, are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help ensure accurate tracking and coordination of system changes. These competencies are critical for maintaining system integrity, compliance, and efficiency in managing complex IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by configuration analysts, and how can they be addressed?

Configuration Analysts often encounter challenges related to maintaining accurate documentation, managing frequent changes, and ensuring consistency across multiple systems or environments. Keeping configuration records up-to-date can be demanding, especially in fast-paced IT environments with complex infrastructures. To address these challenges, it’s important to establish clear processes for change management, use robust configuration management tools, and foster strong communication with development, operations, and QA teams. Regular audits and continuous training also help minimize errors and maintain system integrity.

  • Establish and maintain configuration baselines for hardware, software, network infrastructure, and associated documentation.
  • Support Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and coordinate configuration management efforts across multiple stakeholders.
  • Validate implemented configuration changes and ensure modifications are accurately reflected within the CMDB and supporting repositories.
  • Perform data validation, reconciliation, and CMDB data quality reviews to improve accuracy and integrity.
  • Support configuration verification, audit activities, and corrective action efforts to ensure compliance with approved standards and procedures.
  • Prepare monthly status reports, metrics, meeting minutes, and supporting documentation.
  • Provide user guidance and training related to configuration management processes and CMDB usage.
  • Maintain traceability of approved changes and support lifecycle management of enterprise infrastructure assets.
  • Collaborate with Government and contractor personnel to support mission readiness and continuous process improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of Configuration Management experience supporting enterprise IT, telecommunications, or Department of Defense (DoD) environments.
  • Active Secret security clearance required. Must be a US citizen.

  • Knowledge of configuration management principles, lifecycle management, and industry best practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience developing or maintaining Configuration Management documentation, SOPs, workflows, and related governance artifacts.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic operational environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Joint, Air Force, Combatant Command, or other DoD organizations.
  • Experience with ServiceNow or other enterprise ITSM/CMDB platforms.
  • Experience supporting enterprise network, telecommunications, SATCOM, or mission-critical communications environments.
  • Experience supporting Functional Configuration Audits (FCA) and Physical Configuration Audits (PCA).
  • Prior experience supporting Configuration Control Board (CCB) activities and enterprise change management programs.
