Job description

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Our Global Pharma Strategy (GPS) team is the heartbeat of Pharma, setting the rhythm by shaping Roche's strategic direction and ensuring our portfolio delivers meaningful innovation to patients worldwide. By integrating scientific, commercial, and market insights, GPS drives enterprise-wide strategy, portfolio prioritization, and business model innovation to advance Roche's leadership in the evolving healthcare landscape. As part of the Portfolio, Strategy, and Insights (PSI) team within GPS, which is composed of Advanced Analytics for Business Insights, Competitive Intelligence, Ecosystem Insights, Partnering Commercial Assessment Leads, and Pharma Portfolio & Strategy, these teams work together to provide unbiased, expertly curated, and technology-enabled intelligence to drive lifecycle management, commercialization excellence, and portfolio strategies. The Global Competitive Intelligence (CI) team delivers high-quality competitive intelligence and actionable recommendations that shape Roche's decision-making across leadership and end-to-end (E2E) molecule teams.

In this role as a Competitive Intelligence Leader based in Basel, you will lead and implement competitive intelligence strategies for both early- and late-stage pipeline assets, as well as prioritized on-market products by leveraging AI-driven technologies and deep analysis of scientific, clinical, and commercial information. You will serve as a strategic thought partner and trusted advisor in guiding Roche's product, disease area, pharma, and corporate strategy, focusing your efforts on specific Disease Areas (DA) within a Therapeutic Area (TA) and broader industry trends. As a catalyst for strategic collaboration, you will engage with key functions including Research and Early Development (RED), Product Development (PD), PDMA, GPS, Partnering/Business Development, US Pharma, and Pharma International to drive strategic impact.

The Opportunity
  • Strategic Thought Leadership & Competitive Intelligence: Act as a strategic thought partner, providing high-quality insights and recommendations to guide decision-making at the Disease Area (DA), Therapeutic Area (TA), and enterprise levels. Analyze and synthesize data from multiple sources (including primary/secondary research, real-world evidence, and AI-driven analytics) to anticipate market evolution, competitor moves, and emerging trends that impact Roche's strategy and competitiveness.

  • Competitive Pipeline Development: Shape competitive strategies by informing competitive positioning, TPP creation, and launch plans (value proposition, differentiation, messaging), while leading the assessment of standard-of-care evolution by synthesizing insights at pre-clinical and clinical stages, including emerging trends and modalities.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence: Partner with key internal stakeholders (GPS, R&D, Product Development, Medical Affairs, Business Development, and commercial teams) to ensure insights are embedded in strategic planning, while fostering collaboration across the lifecycle, functions, and geographies to maximize impact.

  • Project, Stakeholder & Vendor Management: Lead and execute strategic initiatives with clear objectives, ensuring timely, high-quality, and impactful deliverables. Manage relationships with external agencies and internal partners, ensuring complete alignment with business priorities and objectives.

  • Innovation & AI-Enabled Insights: Champion the adoption of advanced analytics, AI-driven intelligence, and new methodologies to enhance insight generation, and pioneer new ways of working that improve efficiency and decision-making agility across the enterprise.

  • External Opportunity & Risk Assessment: Evaluate and provide intelligence on competitor strategies, industry trends, and external business opportunities, collaborating directly with business development and partnering teams to assess investment decisions and potential threats.

  • Competitive Readiness & Commercial Execution: Enhance Roche's commercial and launch strategies by ensuring competitive readiness across pre-launch and marketed products, while partnering with affiliate networks to embed a competitive mindset across the organization and maximize portfolio value.

Who You Are
  • Education & Language: You hold a Bachelor's Degree in life sciences or a related discipline, though an MD, PharmD, MBA, or PhD in life sciences, technical, or analytical disciplines is preferred. You are also fully proficient in both written and verbal English.

  • Professional Experience: You bring 7+ years of experience in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or related management consulting, with a strong track record in insights and/or strategy roles, including experience supporting research & development and/or product launch strategies (preferred).

  • Strategic & Analytical Capability: You possess a proven ability to develop and connect strategies to impactful decision-making, with exceptional skills in analyzing market dynamics and emerging trends (e.g., standards of care, new modalities, technologies, platforms) to drive strategic implications.

  • Advanced Skills: You have exceptional skills in synthesizing insights from diverse sources (primary/secondary CI, congress coverage) into clear, data-driven strategic recommendations, alongside strong storytelling, communication, and interpersonal skills to translate complex data and influence senior leaders without authority. You have a demonstrated ability to leverage new technologies to enhance insight generation and monitor competitor strategies to anticipate external threats and opportunities.

  • Leadership & Adaptability: You display an exceptional ability to lead high-performing teams and influence cross-functional stakeholders in a matrixed, multicultural environment. You thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic atmosphere, managing ambiguity while driving strategic planning, resource prioritization, and business impact, and you are available to travel up to 25% of the time.
