What is a community specialist?

Community Specialists are professionals who help build, manage, and nurture relationships within online or offline communities related to a brand, organization, or cause. They act as the bridge between the organization and its community members, fostering engagement, addressing concerns, and promoting a positive atmosphere. Their responsibilities often include moderating discussions, organizing events, gathering feedback, and creating content to keep members informed and involved. Community Specialists play a crucial role in strengthening loyalty, improving communication, and ensuring the community's overall health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a community specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Community Specialist, you need strong communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with community management tools like Slack, Discord, or social media platforms, and sometimes certifications in community management, are typically used. Empathy, conflict resolution, and the ability to foster engagement are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential for building vibrant, supportive communities that drive engagement and achieve organizational goals.

How does a community specialist typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Community Specialists often serve as a bridge between the community and various internal teams, such as marketing, customer support, and product development. They relay community feedback, trends, and concerns to help shape product features or communication strategies. Regular meetings and cross-functional projects are common, meaning you’ll frequently coordinate with colleagues to ensure community needs are addressed effectively. This collaborative approach not only enhances the user experience but also helps foster a cohesive brand presence.

Job description

Position Overview

Fit2Run is looking for a dynamic, people-loving, community-driven In-Store Community Specialist who thrives on connection, energy, and bringing people together.

This role is a unique blend of community builder and retail athlete—someone who will actively engage with the local running and fitness community while also contributing on the sales floor. You’ll partner closely with the Store Manager and Community Marketing Coordinator to create meaningful experiences, drive traffic, and elevate the Fit2Run brand both inside and outside the store.

This position is split between:

  • Community engagement & outreach
  • Retail Sales Associate responsibilities

What You’ll Do

Community Engagement & Outreach

You are the face of Fit2Run in the community—building relationships, creating experiences, and making things happen.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local run clubs, race directors, fitness studios, and wellness partners
  • Collaborate with the Community Marketing Coordinator to secure and execute race packet pickup partnerships
  • Plan and lead in-store events like group runs, workshops, and brand activations that bring energy into the store
  • Partner with coaches, athletes, and fitness professionals to create memorable and meaningful community experiences
  • Represent Fit2Run at races, expos, and community events—bringing the brand to life
  • Support marketing efforts by helping promote events through social media and in-store channels
  • Help execute and grow the Doctor’s Program, including outreach and event planning (Doctor Nights)
  • Track participation, engagement, and partnership success to continuously improve impact

Retail Sales Floor

You’re also part of the in-store team—delivering an exceptional customer experience every single day.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked sales floor and backroom
  • Ensure footwear, insoles, and accessories are properly merchandised and easy to shop
  • Deliver Fit2Run’s signature customer experience: measure, scan, fit, and perform gait analysis for every customer
  • Perform gait analysis according to Fit2Run standards
  • Assist customers with footwear, accessories, and cross-department needs
  • Fill prescription requests in alignment with podiatrist recommendations (with manager support as needed)
  • Maximize every interaction by recommending complementary products (socks, insoles, apparel, etc.)
  • Help maintain overall store cleanliness and presentation
  • Follow all Fit2Run policies, procedures, and opening/closing checklists
  • Ensure every customer in the store is acknowledged and assisted

What You Bring

  • A genuine passion for running, fitness, and community connection
  • Natural relationship-building and networking ability
  • Strong organization and event coordination skills
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends (that’s when the community shows up!)
  • Comfort with social media and promoting events (a plus)
  • High energy, positivity, and a people-first mindset
  • Retail experience preferred—but personality and passion go a long way

Why This Role Matters

This role is more than just a job—it’s about creating a community hub inside every store. You’ll help turn customers into loyal runners, events into traditions, and stores into destinations.
