What is colocation?

Colocation is a service that allows businesses to rent space for their servers and other computing hardware at a third-party data center. These facilities provide the necessary power, cooling, bandwidth, and physical security, so companies don't have to maintain their own data centers. This arrangement helps organizations improve uptime, scale their IT infrastructure, and reduce costs associated with managing on-premises equipment.

What are some of the common challenges faced by professionals working in colocation facilities, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in colocation facilities often face challenges such as ensuring continuous uptime, managing diverse client requirements, and maintaining strict security protocols. They must also coordinate with client IT teams, vendors, and internal staff to quickly resolve technical issues and perform scheduled maintenance without service interruptions. To address these challenges, effective communication, strong troubleshooting skills, and adherence to standardized operating procedures are essential. Additionally, ongoing training and collaboration with cross-functional teams help ensure smooth facility operations and client satisfaction.

Colocation involves providing space, power, and cooling for clients' servers within a data center, focusing on infrastructure management. Data Center Technicians perform hands-on hardware and network maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation within data centers. While both roles operate in similar environments and require technical skills, colocation emphasizes infrastructure management for clients, whereas Data Center Technicians focus on technical support and hardware upkeep.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Colocation Facility Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Colocation Facility Manager, you need a strong understanding of data center operations, electrical and HVAC systems, and experience in facilities management, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like BICSI or CDCP. Familiarity with building management systems (BMS), data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software, and compliance standards such as ISO or Uptime Institute is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with clients and vendors are standout soft skills. These skills ensure efficient, reliable facility operations and support critical uptime and service delivery for clients.

Job description

About Fluidstack
We exist to make humanity more free. For most of human history, you farmed or you starved. Technology gave people more time for the things they wanted to do, instead of things they had to do. Powerful AI will be the biggest lever for human choice we've ever built - but only if models are aligned with what humanity actually wants. There are groups building AI who don't share these goals. Whoever deploys frontier compute infrastructure fastest will decide whether AI expands human freedom or shrinks it.
We're singularly focused on delivering 10 to 100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else, rethinking every layer of the stack. We acquire power, design and build data centers, and operate them - with teams spanning hardware and software. Speed and scale are our key differentiators. Come be a part of building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI.
We hire people who care deeply about this problem space. If that is you, please apply!
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Colocation Site Selection Manager to lead the procurement strategy for our US-focused data center portfolio. In this role, you will be responsible for sourcing and evaluating colocation opportunities at powered land sites suitable for large-scale data center development, and engaging with Colocation Providers and Data Center Operators to negotiate lease arrangements.
We currently have a US portfolio of >600MW in colocation data center assets, and we intend to expand this to multi-GW scale in the next 12 months. You will be instrumental in ensuring our success in this expansion, and you will work closely with our data center team to ensure colocation sites are appropriate for the scale and design our customers need.
Focus
  • Conduct site due diligence to evaluate colocation-ready powered land and development sites, including:
    • Evaluate robustness of both utility and behind-the-meter power solutions at 200MW+ scale.
    • Assess the buildability of land parcels by reviewing title docs, land surveys, geotechnical reports, environmental studies etc.
    • Understand permitting requirements at each colocation site and the implications for our construction schedule.
  • Maintain relationships with colocation providers, brokers, landowners, and developers to ensure we never miss a valid site.
  • Conduct vendor due diligence, including on-site audits with specialist engineers.
  • Work directly with our DC Design team to ensure colocation sites continue to meet our most up-to-date technical requirements.
  • Own capacity planning and forecasting across all clients and regions to ensure colocation capacity availability for new and unforeseen projects.
  • Collaborate with Finance to evaluate multi-year colocation infrastructure investments and cost structures.
  • Lead commercial negotiations with colocation providers and landowners/developers for land acquisitions/leases.
About You
  • 5+ years of real estate experience with a focus on colocation data centers or other large-scale industrial projects.
  • Strong ability to assess the viability of colocation land opportunities for data center development.
  • Customer-centric mindset with a strong sense of ownership and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; able to align stakeholders across diverse teams and functions.
  • Proven track record of closing large/complex colocation or real estate deals.
  • Travel 25%+ as needed for projects.

Salary & Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package (salary + equity).
  • Retirement or pension plan, in line with local norms.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous PTO policy, in line with local norms.

The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $250,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This range represents our good faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting. Total compensation may also include equity in the form of stock options.
We are committed to pay equity and transparency.
