Phlebotomy Trainee - Christiansburg, VA, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Pay range: $18.00 / hour

Phlebotomy Services Representative Trainees are hired with the intent of developing the skills required of a Patient Services I (PSR I) by the end of the training program. The length of the training program will be established by the applicable department.
Responsibilities
  • Greet customers appropriately. Treat all customers in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
  • Under constant supervision by the Training Specialist and/or Site Lead/Trainer may practice specimen collection according to established procedures and legal requirements.
  • Responsible for completing requisitions accurately.
  • Call clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify test(s) ordered, obtain accurate billing information (i.e., Diagnosis codes, UPIN information, etc.)
  • Research test/client information utilizing lab computer system or Directory of Service.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Maintains required records and documentation.
  • Reads, understands and complies with departmental policies, protocols and procedures: (i.e., Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual, Automobile policies and procedures, Employee Handbook, Quality Assurance Manual)
  • Maintains all appropriate PSC/Phlebotomy logs.
  • Assists with compilation of monthly statistics and data. Submits data on time.
  • Perform basic clerical duties as required by Quest Diagnostics, i.e., filing, faxing, preparing mail. Required to perform electronic data entry.
  • Submits accurate time and travel logs as directed by management and on time.
  • Submits accurate expense forms, if applicable, on the required day.
  • Demonstrates organizational commitment.
  • Adheres to departmental and company code of grooming, dress code and PPE guidelines, appears professional, neat and clean at all times.
  • Reports on time to work, following attendance guidelines.
  • Answers the telephone in a courteous and professional manner, by incorporating the company name, self-identification and a courteous greeting.
  • Communicates appropriately with clients, patients, coworkers and the public.
  • Communicates all unresolved problems immediately to the appropriate Manager, Supervisor, Group Lead or PSR II for resolution.
  • Remains professional, polite and courteous at all times.
  • Miscellaneous duties and responsibilities.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean. Disposes of biohazard containers when scheduled.
  • Help with inventories and other tasks as assigned.
  • Stock supplies as needed.
  • Performs other department-related duties when assigned.
  • Participates on teams and special projects when asked
  • All other duties as assigned, within scope of position.

  • Be on time and present to each class, for the entire class. Attendance is required.
  • Attentive and participate during class,
  • Maintain an 80% success rate on classwork and achieve an 80% or better final exam score.
  • Complete competencies as assigned by deadline.
  • Achieve proficient training levels and competencies in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate 100 successful live sticks by the end of training under direct supervision.
  • Trainees are REQUIRED to perform multiple observed venipunctures and dermal punctures which may be on another trainee, and in turn each trainee may have venipuncture and dermal punctures performed on them by another trainee, there are no exceptions, participation is mandatory.

Qualifications
Required Work Experience:
  • Keyboard/data entry application.
  • Experience in Customer Service

Preferred Work Experience:
  • Medical training helpful but not required.
  • Medical terminology helpful but not required.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Capable of handling multiple priorities in a high-volume setting.

Knowledge:
  • Medical training helpful but not required.

  • The position requires the ability to effectively communicate in English.
