Cellar Interns often face physically demanding work and long hours during the harvest season, as tasks like pumping over, cleaning tanks, and moving barrels require stamina and attention to detail. The fast-paced environment can present challenges in time management and adapting to rapidly changing priorities. To prepare, interns should focus on building physical endurance, familiarize themselves with basic cellar operations, and be proactive in communicating with supervisors to clarify expectations. Being open to feedback and maintaining a positive attitude will also help navigate the steep learning curve typical of harvest work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cellar Intern, and why are they important?

Familiarity with winery equipment, fermentation tanks, and safety protocols is essential, and some positions may value forklift certification. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this hands-on role. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining wine quality, ensuring safety, and supporting efficient cellar operations during high-demand periods like harvest.

What are cellar interns?

Cellar interns are entry-level workers in wineries who assist with the production of wine, particularly during the harvest season. Their duties often include tasks such as cleaning tanks and equipment, transferring and monitoring wine, processing fruit, and helping with fermentations. The position offers hands-on experience in winemaking and is often considered a valuable stepping stone for those seeking a career in the wine industry. Cellar interns work closely with winemakers and cellar staff to learn the practical aspects of wine production.
