Summary Job Description:

The Foster Care Case Management Intern supports the foster care team in providing coordinated services to children and families. Under supervision, the intern assists with service coordination, documentation support, family engagement efforts, and treatment team collaboration.

This internship is designed to provide exposure to child welfare case practice, court processes, permanency planning, and interdisciplinary teamwork within a nonprofit human services setting.

About Little Flower

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York is a human services nonprofit supporting the well-being of children, youth, families, and individuals across New York City and Long Island since 1929.

Our staff of more than 500 builds well-being by providing prevention services, foster care, residential treatment care, adoption services, programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities, and medical and mental health services.


Principle Responsibilities

  • Shadow Case Planners and Case Aides during foster home visits and family meetings (as appropriate)
  • Assist with coordinating Parenting Time schedules and related documentation
  • Support preparation for treatment plan conferences and discharge meetings
  • Observe court proceedings with supervisory staff (as appropriate)
  • Assist with documentation entry under supervisory review
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and unit meetings
  • Support engagement efforts with families and youth
  • Assist with gathering required documentation for new admissions and service updates
  • Attend supervision sessions and assigned professional development activities
  • Interns will not independently manage cases, enter official documentation without review, obtain medical consents independently, or represent the agency in court.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this internship, the intern will:

  • Develop foundational knowledge of the child welfare and foster care system.
  • Understand the structure and purpose of treatment planning and permanency goals.
  • Demonstrate professional documentation skills within a case management database.
  • Observe and apply engagement strategies when working with families and youth.
  • Gain exposure to court processes, school collaboration, and interdisciplinary casework.
  • Strengthen communication skills when interacting with families, supervisors, and service providers.
  • Understand the role of a Case Planner and pathways into full-time child welfare positions.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s program in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Interest in child welfare, foster care, or family services

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior volunteer or internship experience working with children or families
  • Interest in pursuing a career in child welfare or social services

Travel Requirements

This internship is based in Brooklyn, NY and may include supervised travel throughout New York Cityโ€™s five boroughs.
