How do you become a caption writer?

To become a caption writer, you typically need strong writing and editing skills, proficiency with captioning tools or software, and a good understanding of timing and accuracy. Many employers prefer candidates with a background in journalism, communications, or related fields, and some roles may require certification or training in captioning standards.

Do captioning jobs still exist?

Yes, captioning jobs for roles such as caption writers are still available, especially in media, entertainment, and accessibility services. These jobs often require skills in transcription, attention to detail, and familiarity with captioning software, and they can be performed remotely or on-site.

What Does a Caption Writer Do?

Caption writers transcribe the words spoken in television shows and movies. These stenotyping services provide closed-captioning for the hearing impaired or translations for foreign films. You utilize stenotype machines with shorthand keys that accelerate your typing speed to give accurate transcriptions for the audience. Your captioned words help programming stations follow the requirements set forth by the Federal Communications Commission. You may work on previously recorded material, which allows you to repeat scenes and review your work to ensure accuracy, or you may transcribe live broadcasts to document everything that is said in real-time.

How does a Caption Writer collaborate with video editors and content creators during the production process?

Caption Writers typically work closely with video editors and content creators to ensure captions accurately reflect spoken dialogue, sound effects, and important on-screen text. Communication is key—Caption Writers often review scripts, clarify unclear audio, and adjust caption timing to match the video's pacing. This collaboration helps maintain the video's accessibility and enhances viewer engagement. Effective teamwork ensures captions are delivered on schedule and meet quality standards required for broadcast or digital platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Caption Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Caption Writer, you need excellent language proficiency, strong grammar skills, and attention to detail, typically supported by a background in communications, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with captioning software, video editing tools, and knowledge of accessibility standards such as FCC or ADA guidelines is often required. Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate, engaging, and accessible captions that enhance content reach and viewer comprehension.

Is captioning a good side hustle?

Caption writing can be a viable side hustle as it often offers flexible hours and remote work opportunities. Success depends on strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with captioning tools or software. It can provide supplemental income for those interested in media, communication, or transcription work.

How much do caption writers get paid?

Caption writers typically earn between $10 and $25 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the work. Freelance caption writers may charge per project or per minute of audio, with rates varying accordingly.

What are caption writers?

Caption writers are professionals who create written descriptions or subtitles for visual content such as photographs, videos, or television broadcasts. Their work involves writing concise, accurate, and engaging text that explains or adds context to images or spoken content, making it accessible to a wider audience, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Caption writers must have excellent language skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of the subject matter to ensure clarity and relevance. They play a crucial role in media, journalism, and entertainment industries.

Social Media Content Creator & Producer

Part-Time Contractor | Hybrid – New York City

About Extension Health

Extension Health is a physician-led longevity and health optimization clinic redefining how people age, perform, and thrive. With over 12 years of clinical expertise and 50,000+ patients served, we combine cutting-edge therapeutics, advanced diagnostics, and a luxury member experience to deliver measurable transformation.

Founded by Dr. Jonathann Kuo, a globally recognized leader in regenerative and longevity medicine. Extension Health brings together medical authority, scientific innovation, and human-centered care. Our brand is trusted by high-performance individuals worldwide - from CEOs, athletes, celebrities and Heads of State - who seek the most advanced, evidence-based longevity solutions available.

Our mission is simple but profound: to help people live healthier, longer, and more vibrant lives - so they can do more of what they love, for longer, with the people they love.

We believe in expanding not just lifespan, but healthspan - so every year gained is a year well-lived.

Why Now

The longevity movement is exploding.

Breakthroughs in cellular repair, peptides, biologics, and precision diagnostics are transforming how we understand and extend human health.Extension Health sits at the very cutting edge of this revolution - blending advanced medical science, personalized care, and luxury experience to deliver results that redefine what’s possible. This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to help scale a trusted, physician-founded brand that’s already known for excellence - and to define the global conversation around human optimization.

About the Role

We're looking for a hands-on, highly creative Social Media Content Creator & Producer to join our growing team across three complementary brands at the intersection of longevity medicine, physician thought leadership, and direct-to-consumer health. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves role — equal parts shooter, editor, caption writer, and community manager. You'll be the person who makes it all happen.

This is a part-time contractor position (~20 hours/week, 3 days/week) with a hybrid schedule. Some days you'll be on-site in our NYC offices for shoots; other days you'll edit and plan remotely.

The Brands You'll Work Across

  • Extension Health — a premium longevity clinic in NYC offering cutting-edge therapies and precision medicine
  • Dr. Jonathann Kuo — double board-certified physician, founder, and emerging thought leader in the longevity space
  • EHRx.health — a national DTC telehealth platform for peptide and longevity therapies

What You'll Do

Content Production & Video Editing

  • Shoot and edit short-form video content for Instagram Reels and TikTok, maintaining a consistent, elevated aesthetic across all three brands
  • Edit longer-form YouTube content, including Dr. Kuo's educational and thought leadership videos
  • Repurpose long-form content into short-form clips, carousels, and stories
  • Bring a strong visual sensibility and understanding of what performs on each platform

Caption Writing & Copywriting

  • Write scroll-stopping captions that balance education, trust, and engagement
  • Adapt voice and tone across brands — clinical authority for Dr. Kuo, aspirational wellness for Extension Health, accessible and science-backed for EHRx
  • Proofread and QA all content before publishing

Social Media Calendar Planning

  • Own and maintain a monthly content calendar across all three brands
  • Coordinate with the marketing manager to align content with campaigns, launches, and seasonal moments
  • Keep the content pipeline organized and moving without hand-holding

Community Engagement

  • Monitor comments, DMs, and mentions across platforms
  • Respond to community interactions in brand voice, escalating when appropriate
  • Identify engagement opportunities and trending audio/formats to act on quickly

What We're Looking For

  • 2–4 years of hands-on social media and content production experience
  • Strong video editing skills — proficiency in CapCut, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or equivalent
  • A sharp eye for aesthetics and an instinct for what resonates on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube
  • Excellent writing skills — you know how to write a caption that actually gets read
  • Experience managing multi-brand or multi-account social presence a strong plus
  • Self-starter who can work independently, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-moving environment
  • Familiarity with the health, wellness, or longevity space is a plus — genuine curiosity is a must
  • NYC-based and available for on-site shoots as needed

This Role Is Right for You If…

You're someone who lives on Instagram and TikTok not just for fun, but because you genuinely study what works. You can pick up a camera, direct a quick shoot, and turn it into a polished Reel — all before lunch. You care about the craft of a good caption as much as the cut of a good video. And you're excited to help build something at the frontier of medicine and longevity.

To apply, please send your resume, portfolio or social media handles you've managed, and a brief note on why this role excites you.
