Job description

Living for the City, Magnet Originals (CONTRACT)
Contract: 3 to 4 weeks
Rate: $3K to $5K depending on scope and experience Start: ASAP, launch is early May
THE ROLE
We are hiring a social video editor who specializes in YouTube Shorts and TikTok to cut social clips for a prestige music documentary podcast hosted by cultural critic, and best selling author Hanif Abdurraqib and launching May 13. The series is independently produced by Magnet Originals (no sponsor or brand attached), but with a global entertainment partner who is supporting the launch. You will be cutting both hero YT Shorts and a volume layer of clips across the pre-launch runway and the first several episode drops, pulling from premium interview footage, Detroit archival, and already-greenlit B-roll.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
You will build Shorts against a creative brief that has clip targets and content pillars already mapped per episode. Hero Shorts are the premium pieces that carry launch moments and editorial weight. The volume layer covers cut-down interview segments, artist origin stories, and location-based pieces that keep the feed alive between drops. You will work across four content pillars: Detroit Made artist origin stories, Hanif Said What text-on-screen soundbites, Zip Code location pieces, and Every Revolution editorial cuts for LinkedIn. Each Short opens with a two-second hook, lands a payoff inside thirty seconds, and drives viewers to the long-form episode on YouTube.
WHO YOU ARE
You live on YouTube Shorts and TikTok and you can prove it with a reel. You understand hook structure, pattern interrupts, curiosity gaps, save-rate psychology, and the difference between a clip that travels and a clip that earns trust. You are fluent in text-on-screen pacing, caption styling, and platform-native motion design. You move fast, take creative direction well, and deliver on tight timelines. You are equally comfortable building premium hero pieces and turning around a higher volume of lighter clips without losing craft. Bonus points if you have worked on music, documentary, or creator-economy content before.
HOW TO APPLY
Send a reel or portfolio, a TikTok handle if you have one, and a short note on your rate and availability and apply via jobs@magnetoriginals.com or over at our sister company at https://www.magnetmediafilms.com/careers. Referrals welcome.
