Job description

Job Summary

The Capacity Planner is responsible for ensuring the efficient and cost-effective movement of freight by aligning shipment needs with carrier capabilities. This role involves sourcing and managing a reliable network of third-party carriers, negotiating competitive rates, and optimizing load assignments. The Capacity Planner uses data analysis and market insights to forecast capacity needs, anticipate seasonal demand, and maintain accurate records in the Transportation Management System (TMS). Collaboration with internal teams and continuous monitoring of carrier performance are key to supporting operational goals and customer satisfaction.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure shipments are matched with the right carriers and delivered efficiently
  • Identify and vet prospective carriers to build a reliable network of service providers
  • Negotiate shipping rates and terms with carriers to ensure cost-effective and timely transportation
  • Match available loads with third party carriers, optimizing routes and schedules to maximize efficiency
  • Analyze historical shipment data and market trends to forecast future capacity needs
  • Anticipate seasonal fluctuations and proactively secure carrier capacity
  • Identify gaps in the carrier network and recommend strategic partnerships
  • Track carrier performance metrics to support data-driven decisions
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date carrier profiles, rate tables, and capacity data in TMS
  • Work closely with transportation operations and customer service to align capacity with demand
  • Stay informed on market conditions
  • Responsible for maintaining SOPs for assigned plants


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of experience in transportation planning, carrier procurement, or logistics operations
  • Understanding of freight markets, carrier operations, and transportation modes preferred
  • Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS) and ERP platforms preferred
  • Familiar with freight rate structures, carrier scorecards, and market intelligence tools
  • Knowledge with Carrier Sourcing and Vetting preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred
  • Knowledge of company policies and procedures preferred
