What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a call center trainer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Call Center Trainer, you need expertise in customer service operations, adult learning principles, and a background in training or coaching, often supported by a degree in communications or related fields. Familiarity with call center software, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and training certifications such as Certified Professional in Training Management (CPTM) is beneficial. Strong presentation, interpersonal, and motivational skills set outstanding trainers apart by fostering engagement and learning. These abilities ensure effective onboarding, skill development, and consistent service quality across call center teams.

What does a call center trainer do?

As a call center trainer, you train customer service representatives in a call center. Your responsibilities vary somewhat on the particular needs of your employer; for instance, you may create a training plan or develop a guide or manuals to help employees learn how to speak to customers. You may present existing material in a class format and provide training demonstrations to staff. Some employers expect call center trainers to assess employee performance and coach those in need of additional guidance.

What are some common challenges faced by call center trainers, and how can they be addressed?

Call Center Trainers often encounter challenges such as varying trainee skill levels, ensuring engagement during remote or in-person sessions, and keeping training materials up-to-date with evolving company protocols. To address these, trainers can assess learning styles early, incorporate interactive techniques like role-playing, and collaborate closely with operations and quality assurance teams for timely content updates. These strategies help ensure that training is effective, relevant, and supports both new hires and existing staff in delivering excellent customer service.

Job description

Call Center Consultant I
Don't you love working with positive people that share your work ethic? We do! We are very much a collaborative team at Oregon State Credit Union, even when we are individually taking calls. Our friendly, detail-oriented Call Center Consultants help our members, but also help each other, because we're better together. This is not your "normal" call center position, it is a team of less than 25, working regular business hours M-F, focused on service instead of statistics. If you have strong office computer skills and customer service experience, we encourage you to join us at Oregon State Credit Union!
As a Call Center Consultant in our Operations Center here in Corvallis, you will make a difference to our members by using several databases and software programs to answer member inquiries on almost every aspect of our services. You'll assist in-coming callers with credit union eligibility, credit cards, policies, and even collect and enter loan application information. It's about identifying the caller's true needs and providing solutions that work best for them. Use this high customer service role as your gateway into a steady, long-term financial career.
No weekends or nights! Must be available between the hours of 8 am and 5:45 pm, M-F
Ways we'll appreciate you:
  • A dynamic, supportive culture
  • Competitive wages, incentive bonuses, paid holidays and paid PTO time
  • 100% credit-union-paid employee medical, dental, vision, life, short-term and long-term disability insurance; dependent coverage also available
  • 401k Retirement savings plan with a very generous employer match
  • Tax-saving Flexible Spending Plans, HSA
  • Premier membership perks, loan discounts, company clothing, wellness and recognition programs

Since it began in 1954, Oregon State Credit Union has been a member-owned, not-for-profit financial services institution. We exist for the benefit of our member-owners, and not to profit from them. That's what makes us different from banks and how we're able to create financial solutions that make lives better. The service you'll provide by assisting our members via phone will have a direct, positive impact on our community.
What you will need to be successful:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must have customer service experience and exceptional phone skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to spot and research anomalies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and experience working with computers required
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, tact and ability to make sound decisions
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • 1-2 years of financial industry experience preferred

Location: 4800 SW Research Way, Corvallis
Work type: Full-time, on-site, non-exempt
Compensation: $21.41/hr + bonus and incentives
Oregon State Credit Union is an equal opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
The information above provides the general nature of work performed in this position and outlines primary qualifications. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they have the legal right to work in the US and pass a background screening to the satisfaction of Oregon State Credit Union.
