What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Business Development Manager (Commission Based), and why are they important?

To excel as a Business Development Manager (Commission Based), you need strong sales acumen, market research skills, and a proven track record in business growth, often supported by a degree in business or related fields. Familiarity with CRM platforms, lead generation tools, and data analytics systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills to stand out in this high-performance, target-driven environment. What are Business Development Managers (Commission Based)?

Business Development Managers (Commission Based) are professionals responsible for identifying and pursuing new business opportunities for their company, with their earnings primarily tied to the deals they close or the revenue they generate. Unlike salaried roles, their compensation is mainly commission-based, incentivizing them to achieve sales targets and expand the company's client base. They typically handle tasks such as prospecting, networking, building relationships with potential clients, and negotiating contracts. This role requires strong communication, negotiation, and sales skills, as well as a deep understanding of the company's products or services. Success in this position often leads to significant earning potential based on performance.

What are some common challenges faced by commission-based Business Development Managers, and how can they be addressed?

Commission-based Business Development Managers often face challenges such as income variability, high-pressure sales targets, and the need to consistently generate new leads. Managing a fluctuating income requires strong budgeting skills and a proactive approach to pipeline development. Building a robust professional network, staying updated with industry trends, and leveraging CRM tools can help maintain steady deal flow. Additionally, collaborating closely with marketing and product teams can provide valuable support for achieving sales goals.

Does a business development manager get commission?

Business development managers often receive commissions or performance-based incentives in addition to their base salary, especially when their role involves generating new business or closing deals. The specific compensation structure varies by company and industry, and some roles may include bonuses or profit-sharing arrangements based on sales targets. Skills in negotiation and client relationship management are important for earning commissions in this position.

Job description

Business Development Manager

Independent Contractor | Remote-Nationwide | Commission-Based | 1099 | U.S.-Based Only

THIS ROLE IS FOR HUNTERS ONLY โ€” If you wait for business to come to you, this is not your seat.

About This Opportunity

We are a nationally recognized, women-owned and minority-owned staffing and recruiting agency. As an NPA member, we connect top talent with opportunities across every industry โ€” from technology and healthcare to legal, CDL transportation, federal contracting, and beyond.

We operate on a 1099 independent contractor model, giving our recruiter partners the freedom to build their own book, set their own pace, and earn the highest commissions in the industry โ€” all while leveraging our established client relationships, proprietary toolset, and world-class training infrastructure.

The Opportunity

This is not a role for order-takers. We are looking for aggressive, self-starting Business Development Managers who are ready to hunt, close, and build โ€” from the ground up. You will own the full business development and recruiting lifecycle: identifying clients, developing relationships, negotiating agreements, sourcing candidates, and driving placements across every industry.

If you are independent, determined, and driven by results, we will give you everything you need to succeed: access to Apollo.io for prospecting, a CRM to manage your pipeline, top-of-the-world training to sharpen your craft, and a commission structure that pays out higher than any competing agency in the market. Your earnings are entirely in your hands โ€” and there is no ceiling.

Who We're Looking For

We want go-getters. We want people who wake up thinking about pipeline. This role is built for:

  • Hunters โ€” professionals who actively pursue new business and don't wait for inbound leads
  • Business Development-minded recruiters who understand that placements start with client relationships
  • Self-starters who thrive in remote, autonomous environments with no micromanagement
  • Independent, determined operators who own their results and hold themselves accountable
  • U.S.-based professionals only โ€” you must reside and be authorized to work in the United States
Core Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Proactively identify, prospect, and cold outreach to new clients using Apollo.io and other channels
  • Conduct discovery calls to uncover hiring needs, headcount timelines, and budget parameters
  • Negotiate and close fee agreements in partnership with leadership
  • Build and maintain a personal book of business with consistent follow-up and relationship management
  • Develop referral pipelines and strategic partnerships to generate ongoing client flow

Talent Acquisition

  • Source and attract qualified candidates through proactive outreach, referrals, and inbound applications
  • Conduct structured phone screens and interviews to assess candidate fit against client requirements
  • Prepare and present branded candidate profiles and scorecards
  • Manage the full candidate experience from first contact through offer acceptance
  • Negotiate compensation packages and guide candidates through resignation and transition

Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate candidate and client records in our ATS
  • Adhere to all confidentiality protocols and recruiter code of conduct
  • Submit timely pipeline updates, activity reports, and placement notifications to leadership
  • Collaborate on split placements through our NPA network when applicable
Candidate Requirements
  • Must be based in the United States โ€” no exceptions
  • Minimum 1โ€“2 years of full desk or business development recruiting experience (agency strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated track record of client development and placements
  • Hunter mentality โ€” you initiate contact, you build pipeline, you close
  • Ability to work independently with no supervision in a remote environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills โ€” you must be able to sell
  • Comfortable with cold outreach, rejection, and persistent follow-up
  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and fully committed to a commission-only income model
  • Experience across multiple industries or verticals is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with Apollo.io or similar outbound prospecting tools preferred
Top-of-the-World Training โ€” Included

Every Business Development Manager receives access to our comprehensive training program โ€” built from the ground up by a founder with years of high-volume, multi-vertical recruiting experience. Training covers:

  • Full desk recruiting methodology โ€” from BD outreach to candidate close
  • Apollo.io setup, sequences, and prospecting best practices
  • Phone screen frameworks and structured interviewing techniques
  • Client presentation, fee negotiation, and objection handling
  • ATS workflow, job sheet interpretation, and compliance protocols
  • Ongoing coaching, resources, and access to leadership for real-time support
Tools & Resources Provided
  • Apollo.io access โ€” for client prospecting, outbound sequencing, and contact sourcing
  • CRM access โ€” full client relationship management system to track leads, activity, and pipeline
  • ATS access โ€” applicant tracking system for candidate and client management
  • Active job portfolio โ€” open roles across multiple clients and industries ready to work
  • Branded recruiter resources โ€” job sheets, phone screen guides, email templates, scorecards
  • NPA split placement network โ€” access to thousands of member agencies for cross-desk collaboration
  • Direct access to leadership for deal support, strategy, and escalation
Compensation

Commission only โ€” highest payout in the industry. No cap on earnings. Your income is 100% driven by your placements.

This organization is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to any protected characteristic under applicable law.
