Overview POSITION TITLE (Oracle title) BUS SAFETY ASSISTANT WORKING TITLE Safety Assistant SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT Transportation LOCATION Rock Quarry Rd. Office Complex, Raleigh, NC PAY GRADE Noncertified Grade 17 FLSA STATUS Nonexempt ELIGIBILITY FOR EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT No WORK WEEK SCHEDULE Monday-Friday POSITION PURPOSE: Assists the bus driver/vendor driver in providing safe and efficient transportation for students. Attends to the physical, medical, and/or behavioral needs of students as outlined in the Individualized Education Plans (IEP).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs) Critical thinking and problem solving skills; Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback; Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the community. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Within sixty days of employment attend and pass medical apparatus training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with students with special needs; Experience providing nursing care. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists the bus driver/vendor driver in transporting students to and from school. Attends to the physical, medical, and/or behavioral needs of students as outlined in IEP's, health care plans, or information received from the school system; may could include loading and unloading of equipment, assisting students on and off the bus or vehicle including using lifts, as required, operating medical apparatus, etc.

Uses school system approved methods to maintain order on the school bus/vendor vehicle. Notifies school based administrators of discipline problems on bus/vendor vehicle. Assists with emergency evacuation and safety drills for school transportation.

Collaborates with school system staff to monitor progress and implement components of the IEP as they relate to safe and effective transportation. Performs other related duties, as assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position operates in a school bus or school transportation vehicle.

The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, students, and parents. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and /or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Physical requirements this position are consistent with those for heavy duty work.
