Job description

Position Summary

The Academic Laboratory Manager will oversee the lab coordination and set-up, as well as perform the following tasks: create, implement, and train faculty and students in regards to human safety measures and emergency response policies and protocols for the department (e.g., to address equipment failures, chemical hygiene, natural disasters and facility service failures such as loss of electricity, flooding, and HVAC malfunction) to ensure compliance with state, OSHA, EPA, RCRA institutional standards. The Laboratory Manager will coordinate the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of general supplies, chemicals, labware, biological specimens, and laboratory equipment/instrumentation, and also track and manage all biology laboratory expenses; including service contracts of laboratory equipment, departmental vans, and outside services for consumables.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with CT state, OSHA, RCRA, and EPA standards for chemical and biological materials/waste materials storage, handling, and disposal, including all laboratory safety requirements, protocols, access, and compliance by all faculty, staff, students, and collaborators using laboratories.
  • Conduct laboratory safety training for all personnel (faculty, students, staff), and periodically update safety training for all laboratory personnel.
  • Coordinates the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of general supplies, chemicals, lab ware, biological specimens, and laboratory equipment/instrumentation, and maintains vendor relationships.
  • Track and manage all biology laboratory expenses, including service contracts for laboratory equipment, departmental vans, and outside services for consumables.
  • Coordinating routine maintenance, repairs, and calibration for specialized instruments, including but not limited to (Autoclaves, pipettes, microscopes, chemical fume hoods, and departmental passenger vans).
  • Preparation and set-up of laboratories, including supervision and coordination with the Assistant Lab Manager in all aspects of their position to ensure the efficient and orderly preparation, adaptation, and scaling of teaching laboratories for large multi-section laboratory classes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
