Job description

The Biology Department at Knox College seeks applicants for a laboratory coordinator. The position is a full-time, nine-month appointment running from September 1, 2025 until June 10, 2026, and reports to the chair of the Biology Department.


The Biology Lab Coordinator works closely with biology faculty to facilitate biology lab courses, with an emphasis on introductory biology classes. The Lab Coordinator plays an essential role in the educational mission of the department. Responsibilities include a combination of laboratory, administrative and instructional tasks to coordinate and support the lab and lecture components of these courses.


These duties include:

  • Preparation and organization of laboratory materials and exercises for biology courses

  • Attending introductory biology lectures and labs in order to provide assistance to professors and students

  • Holding office hours in order to provide an instructive role to student comprehension of class/lab material

  • Supervising student performance and attendance in class and labs

  • Grading of lab reports and quizzes for introductory biology classes

  • As time allows, assisting the Biology Lab Manager with other departmental tasks.


Required qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in biology or a related field

  • Broad knowledge of biological concepts and themes

  • Experience working with lab equipment

  • Good interpersonal and teamwork skills

  • Ability and willingness to provide instruction and tutoring to introductory biology students

  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
