The BAM Companies (BAM) began in 2010 in the heart of Indianapolis. Affectionately referred to as the "BAMFAM" by its employees, BAM is a vertically integrated, owner/operator real estate investment company focused on the acquisition and management of multifamily apartment communities. Headquartered in Carmel, Indiana, The BAM Companies consists of BAM Capital and BAM Management - bringing together real estate investment and operations under one roof. In utilizing industry knowledge, the strengths of the team, and market expertise to achieve maximum benefit for residents, owners, and investors, BAM always acts with a focus on its core values of Growth, Fun, Family, and Work-Life Balance. We encourage you to join this winning team and grow with us.

Summary

The BAM Companies is seeking a Corporate Counsel to join our growing in-house legal team. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, this role is built for an attorney who is eager to learn, adaptable, and ready to roll up their sleeves across a wide variety of legal matters. The right candidate will be someone who is curious, comfortable figuring things out, and genuinely excited to grow with the company. This position offers a real opportunity for growth within a legal department that is actively expanding, and we are committed to developing the right person into a more senior role over time.

Description of Role

The Corporate Counsel will support the Associate General Counsel across the full spectrum of BAM's legal needs, with an emphasis on real estate and financing transactions, compliance, and day-to-day legal operations. Over time, this person is expected to take increasing ownership of acquisition and disposition deal flows, develop deep familiarity with BAM's portfolio and partners, and grow into a senior legal leader within the organization.

Key components to being successful in this position will be (a) a willingness to learn and figure things out in a dynamic, growing environment; (b) effective communication and collaboration across internal teams and external partners; and (c) a practical, business-minded approach to legal problem-solving.

Essential Job Functions
  • Support the review, drafting, and negotiation of transaction documents for real estate acquisitions, dispositions, financings, and joint ventures.
  • Review and analyze title, survey, zoning, and environmental information on real estate assets.
  • Interface with title companies, surveyors, lenders' counsel, and loan servicers on financing and refinancing matters.
  • Assist in documenting and closing real estate and financing transactions.
  • Support compliance and risk management programs for BAM Capital and BAM Management, including securities compliance and fair housing compliance.
  • Interpret contract and compliance requirements, assess risk exposure, and advise internal teams on appropriate courses of action.
  • Provide legal support for corporate governance of funds and entities, lending, and property management activities.
  • Collaborate across departments, including property management, asset management, tax, and operations, to deliver practical legal solutions.
  • Manage and maintain legal files, templates, and departmental processes as the legal function continues to develop.
  • Grow into ownership of deal flow and assume increasing responsibility over time.
Competencies
  • Motivated self-starter with a strong desire to learn and develop professionally.
  • Flexible and resourceful - comfortable navigating new situations and finding answers independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities without losing sight of the details.
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal, across all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborative team player who works well with others and takes a business-oriented approach to legal issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Practical mindset - focused on delivering solutions, not just identifying problems.
Growth & Development

The BAM Companies is committed to investing in this person's long-term development. As the legal department grows, there will be meaningful opportunities for increased responsibility and advancement for the right candidate. We are looking for someone who wants to grow with us.

Benefits

BAM offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes some out-of-the-box choices, but things being different and challenging conventional wisdom is how we always operate.

  • Paid Time Off - Upon starting, each employee immediately enjoys all 14.5 paid holidays that BAM observes. At the 90-day mark, we drop 88 hours of PTO into each employee's account - growing to 120 hours on the first BAM-iversary.
  • Traditional Medical and Health Benefits - Medical, dental, vision, voluntary life, short-term disability, long-term disability, and a small pet benefit option, with BAM contributing a larger portion of the total cost each year.
  • Company Culture - BAM lives out its core values: (1) When People Grow, BAM Grows, (2) Loyal, Loving Family, (3) Fun, Quirky Spirit, and (4) Work Hard, Play Hard, WIN! You will never be a number here.
  • Free Life Insurance - BAM pays for $25,000 in life insurance for every employee at no cost to you.
