Job description

Position: Assistant Group Leaderย 

Who we are:ย  The Police Athletic League (PAL) of New York City is an independent youth development nonprofit organization and has been a vibrant and vital institution, serving as an effective, critical bridge between police and communities across all five boroughs of the City since 1914. PAL operates diverse programs for children as young as 2 years old to young adults. Programs include Head Start, after-school programs and summer day camps for elementary, middle and high school youth, and summer Playstreets. PAL also runs evening teen centers and college readiness programs, youth employment, and juvenile justice programs. Staying true to PALโ€™s roots, a cornerstone of our youth development strategy includes offering competitive and recreational sports for children of all ages.ย  At PAL, weโ€™re devoted to empowering communities and building the best places to work, and that goes for our own teams too.ย 

Position Summary:ย 

We are looking for Assistant Group Leaders who will be responsible for planning and facilitating learning, recreational, arts and developmentally appropriate activities for youth tied to the mission of PAL.ย ย 

The Assistant Group Leader will report to the Center Director.ย 

What youโ€™ll do:ย ย 

Major Duties & Responsibilitiesย ย 

  1. Ensure that age-appropriate activities are implemented for youth in K-8th grades.ย ย 

  1. At all times, ensure safety, structure, and learning.ย ย 

  1. Provide supervision during field trips, transitions, and meal times.ย ย 

  1. Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, and behavior.ย ย 

  1. Attend meetings with staff, parents, volunteers, and community residents as needed.ย ย 

  1. Interact with parents and keep open lines of communication.ย 

The Commitmentย 

Able to work 35 hours a week (7 hours a day, 5 days a week)ย 

Able to attend 15 hours of orientation prior to the beginning of programming.ย ย ย 

Able to attend scheduled staff meetings.ย 

What you bring:ย ย 

  • High School Diploma / GED OR 1 year experience working with children under 13 years of age.ย ย 

  • Must be at least 18 years old.ย 

  • Strong Classroom management and behavior management skills.ย ย 

  • Desire to learn and grow.ย ย 

  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.ย 

  • Ability to complete DOHMH/DOE clearances and fingerprints including that an annual physical has been completed in the last year.ย ย ย

March 1st: Face-to-Face Interviews will beginย 

Selected Candidates will be notified and scheduled for clearancesย 

May 20th: Last Day to submit Application (May be placed on waitlist)ย 

Mid-June: Trainings will begin for those who are cleared.ย 

June 30th: Start of Summer Camp for those who are cleared (start date to be confirmed).ย 

Compensation: The salary for this role is 17.00 an hour.ย
