Job Title
Assistant Department Manager
Position Overview
Shaw Industries is hiring an Assistant Department Manager to serve the Tufting Department at plant WD by assisting with the day-to-day management and implementation of the department's requirements within the carpet manufacturing process.
Essential Duties:
  • Act as liaison between Department Managers and Department employees by providing an effective line of communication with regard to company policies.
  • Monitor all departmental production, production quality, processes and procedures and ensure that all employees continually follow departmental SMS procedures and instructions.
  • Give direction and support to department employees with regard to achieving departmental goals and objectives as well as assist in coordinating and maintaining the Department's work force in order to ensure that the goals and objectives are feasible.
  • Identify, coordinate, and/or oversee special departmental projects that contribute to continued improvement in the areas of efficiency, productivity and quality.
  • Assist employees in resolving any job-related problems or concerns to include P.I. (Process Improvement) process, TMS (Tufting Monitoring System), SPC, quality, safety, equipment and training.
  • Attend and/or conduct periodic departmental meetings.
  • When the need arises, perform or delegate the performance of any of the various jobs or procedures within the department while referring to the appropriate SMS Instructional and Procedural documentation.
  • Actively participate in P.R.I.D.E. process either through involvement in a P.R.I.D.E. subcommittee or through creating employee P.R.I.D.E. awareness or both.
  • Provide direct supervision to the Tufting Lead Mechanic and act as manager of the Tufting maintenance organization
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedules for tufting equipment
  • Assist Department Manager in monitoring and addressing cost issues concerning labor and spending for repair and maintenance parts
  • Review all rolls held for tufting defects
  • Review non-conforming product as needed to determine the disposition
  • Review daily quality reports and research tufting charges
  • Fill in for department manager in his/her absence (refer to Department Manager's job description)
  • Serve on task forces and committees as necessary

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in carpet manufacturing and ability to identify carpet defects
