Job description

Job Title: Assistant Coach, Varsity Men's & Women's Cross Country

Supervisor: Athletic Director

Job Classification: Seasonal, Stipend

Job Summary

The Varsity Cross Country Team assistant coach is responsible for coaching high school student athletes in competitive running strategies and techniques to prepare them for interscholastic Cross-Country competitions. Position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport.

Essential Duties

  1. Assist the Athletic Director and Head Coach to create a competitive event schedule and manage meet-day logistics.
  2. Participate in the development of a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development that promotes team growth, endurance, and injury prevention. Coaches must be able to provide guidance for student-athletes in proper running techniques, conditioning, pacing strategies, and race preparation.
  3. Work with the Athletic Trainer to promote athlete health and safety, including awareness of hydration, weather conditions, and injury protocols
  4. Assist the head coach to manage practices and meet-day logistics.
  5. Supervise student-athletes during practices, meets, travel, and team activities to ensure safety and appropriate conduct.
  6. Ensure compliance with all school policies, conference rules, and DIAA Rules and Regulations.
  7. Communicate regularly with athletes, parents, athletic administration, and school staff regarding team expectations, schedules, and updates.
  8. Maintain accurate records including attendance, eligibility, meet results, and program statistics.
  9. Foster a positive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and personal growth
  10. Encourage off-season training, conditioning, and participation in summer programs when appropriate.
  11. Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  12. Participates in special activities including, but not limited to, fundraising, parent information nights, banquets, award nights, pep rallies & assemblies.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills. Must possess a thorough knowledge of NFHS Rules, DIAA Regulations, best practices, and strategies of the sport. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students. Experience as a cross-country coach at the high school or college level preferred.
