West Herr in Rochester, NY is seeking an Assistant Controller
to join our corporate accounting team. This position plays a critical role in overseeing the accounting operations and manages the Rochester Corporate office. You will report to the Director of Accounting.
The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, reviewing accounting activities, and providing leadership to accounting managers and staff.
The ideal candidate possesses strong accounting and analytical skills, leadership experience, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced dealership environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Controllers in overseeing the accounting operations of multiple dealership locations.
  • Review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor and support month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Analyze financial results and investigate significant variances and unusual transactions.
  • Provide guidance and support to accounting managers and staff.
  • Assist with staff training, development, and performance management.
  • Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and reporting requirements.
  • Support manufacturer, lender, audit, and tax reporting requests.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial analyses and management reporting.
  • Collaborate with dealership management and department leaders on accounting-related matters.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased operational efficiencies.
  • Participate in special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned.


Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience required.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Ability to review and analyze financial information and identify issues requiring attention.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across multiple locations.

  • The ability to balance strategic oversight with hands-on accounting support.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Automotive dealership accounting experience.
  • Experience with dealership management systems such as CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, DealerTrack, or similar software.
  • Multi-entity or multi-location accounting experience.
  • Experience managing accounting teams.
