Under the general direction of the Vice President of  Finance, the Controller manages the Association's core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash management, and grant accounting. The Controller ensures timely and accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and maintains compliance with nonprofit regulations and funder requirements.


The Controller partners closely with branch leadership, program teams, and administrative departments to provide accounting guidance, reinforce financial policies, and support effective stewardship. This role also collaborates with Finance leadership, Human Resources, and Information Technology to strengthen internal controls, systems, and processes.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Accounting Operations & Reporting

Manage daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, and general ledger activities

Prepare complete accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP

Maintain accounting systems that ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions, assets, and liabilities

Internal Controls & Compliance

Maintain and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across the Association

Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, donor restrictions, grant requirements, and regulatory filings

Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for audits and financial reviews

Audit & Risk Management

Coordinate and facilitate the annual audit, including preparation of audit workpapers and direct interaction with external auditors

Conduct internal reviews, reconciliations, and risk assessments to strengthen financial controls and accuracy

Support implementation of audit recommendations in coordination with Finance leadership

Cash Management & Grants

Oversee bank account reconciliations and monitor cash flow activity

Maintain detailed investment and restricted fund records

Ensure accurate grant accounting, reporting, and reconciliation

Team Leadership & Collaboration

Build, develop, and lead a high-performing accounting team supporting accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants management, and general accounting.

Serve as a resource to branch and department staff on accounting procedures and best practices

Partner with VP of Finance, HR, and IT to improve systems, workflows, and financial data quality

Requirements


The successful Controller demonstrates strong technical accounting expertise and sound judgment while leading with integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to the YMCA's mission. This role requires the ability to ensure financial accuracy and compliance while supporting branch and operational leaders in achieving positive community impact. The Controller brings


Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred

Minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including supervisory leadership

Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit and fund accounting, grant compliance, and internal control frameworks, with a focus on strong financial stewardship 

Experience overseeing banking relationships, cash management, and investment recordkeeping to ensure fiscal integrity and accountability

Advanced proficiency with accounting systems, financial software, and Excel-based reporting tools; ability to apply best practices and leverage technology 

Proven ability to lead, develop, and support accounting staff while assigning clear accountability and fostering a learning environment 

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting requirements and financial procedures to non-financial leaders 

Commitment to reinforcing YMCA values through ethical financial practices, transparency, and continuous improvement 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to travel location to location across the YMCA of Greater Rochester footprint.

Must be able to sit or stand for the duration of the shift.

Must be able to bend and stoop occasionally.

Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds occasionally.
