What are AS400 Administrators?

AS400 Administrators are IT professionals responsible for managing and maintaining IBM AS/400 (now known as IBM iSeries or IBM i) computer systems. Their duties include system installation, configuration, upgrades, security management, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring. They ensure the smooth operation of business applications running on the AS/400 platform and troubleshoot any issues that arise. AS400 Administrators often work closely with developers and end-users to support organizational needs and ensure data integrity.

What are some typical challenges an AS400 Administrator faces when managing legacy systems in modern IT environments?

AS400 Administrators often encounter challenges integrating legacy IBM iSeries systems with newer technologies, as many organizations still rely on these robust platforms for critical operations. Ensuring compatibility with modern applications, maintaining security patches, and managing system upgrades without disrupting business processes are common tasks. Administrators also need to collaborate closely with other IT teams to bridge knowledge gaps and document system configurations, helping to future-proof operations and support ongoing digital transformation initiatives.

What Is an AS/400 Administrator?

As an AS/400 administrator, you operate a company’s IBM systems. Your duties include monitoring all activities that go along with this, such as system install, upgrading the O/S and applications, hardware maintenance, system backups and recovery, and verification of all backups. You configure the software, perform security authorizations and audits for users, and work with the help desk and other related parties to help them understand security requirements. Other responsibilities as an AS/400 administrator include testing new applications and reporting your results before implementing them into the business. You also help resolve any audit points that are assigned to you and deliver solutions that are production-ready. You then document all system changes and updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AS400 Administrator, you need strong expertise in IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, operating system management, and backup/recovery procedures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like IBM Navigator, BRMS, and knowledge of CL programming and security management are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help you efficiently address system issues and collaborate with technical teams. These skills ensure reliable system performance, data integrity, and minimal downtime for business operations.
