What is an applicant tracking system (ATS)?

An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a software application used by organizations to manage their recruitment and hiring processes. It helps automate tasks such as posting job openings, collecting and organizing resumes, tracking applicants through different stages, and communicating with candidates. ATS platforms are designed to streamline the hiring workflow, improve organization, and ensure compliance with hiring regulations. Many systems also include features like resume parsing, interview scheduling, and analytics to help employers make informed decisions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an applicant tracking system (ATS) specialist?

To thrive as an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) Specialist, you need expertise in recruitment processes, HR best practices, and a solid understanding of data management, typically supported by experience in talent acquisition or human resources. Familiarity with leading ATS platforms (such as Workday, iCIMS, or Greenhouse), HRIS systems, and relevant certifications like SHRM or PHR is important. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help specialists optimize workflows and collaborate with hiring teams. These abilities ensure efficient talent acquisition, regulatory compliance, and a smooth candidate experience.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with applicant tracking systems (ATS) in a recruitment team?
